Mike Lcavilt to improve scholastic achievement throughout the state has been answered by two south Davis County schools. Bountiful Elementary and Woods Cross High were among the first 80 schools achieved their that educational aspirations. Every school in Utah was invited to join the effort to develop an educational program to assist students in reaching scholastic excellence. In addition to the reward of student success, each school which could become Utah a Centennial School would receive $71,000 plus $20 per student in funds to be used toward improving scholastic accomplishments. "Actually," stated Chris Gareson, spokesperson at Bountiful Elementary, "our school has been a Centennial School all along." She explained that Bountiful Elementary had alieady implemented an SEM, monitor for students, or had one of the best PTAs in the aiea, and has one of the highest rates of volunteer workers. The elementary school has also implemented a new contract program. Gone are the old report cards, replaced by a contract that is agreed upon by the students, parents, and teachers. The contract self-estee- establishes goals that are reviewed three times a year. This is the fourth year the program has been in effect and it has been a resounding success. Bountiful Elementary's proposal was a student centered program wherein the partnership of the student, belief and d decision concept of making with the addition of a community council comprised of community, parents, staff and students. This partnership will enhance the communication and increase the awareness of more of our community. It is our plan to improve the areas of technology and vocational excellence at our high school. Most of our efforts will be in the business department for the site-base- Call 1150 information that can be learned. We must establish a new paradigm in which the teacher is the facilitator of learning, the student has the responsibility for the learning, and the community is the resource for that learning. We must give the students the tools to access any information they want, need or have an interest in."
