"We're looking for participation from state and local governments and private interests. This is an idea building session. We want to look at everyone's thoughts and suggestions." The study effort began in January, when the NPS was designated to lead a study task force to evaluate the project, aimed at enhancing tourism by using an historical perspective. The story of Golden Spike is well known. It was at Promontory Summit in Utah at 12:47 p.m., May 10, 1869, that the final spike was driven that completed the transcontinental railroad, linking the nation and opening up trade from coast to coast. The transcontinental railroad influenced the development of American economy society, the U.S. and the American industrial system, changing the face of the frontier. "The story of Golden Spike is more than a single, isolated event," said Chris Marvel, the project director. "Today, our culture is interested in the layers of natural and cultural events that accumulate over time and create rich and distinctive regional landscapes. We may have just such a worthwhile regional corridor here." Marvel said the immediate study area appears to be a coherent and identifiable region with many outstanding natural, cultural, scenic, aesthetic and recreational resources. "Many are directly attributable to the railroad that ried Beth Marie Thompson Dec. 10, 1936 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died Aug. 22, 1987. "It may be that the railroad concept will serve as a catalyst to a growing tourism market, taking advantage of the abundant scenery and rich history of the area," Marvel noted. "We need the help of all the people," he added. "The stories, places, and history of the area are closely tied to its people -- - those who worked on area railroads, those who settled and farmed the areas near the Great Salt Lake, and those who gave the region its rich ethnic character and diversity. "Together, a rich patina of human experience has accumulated that may be worth sharing with the nation." 298-855- Tk and emS No Appointment Salons 6 BOUNTIFUL te 74 East 500 South (next to Payless Drugs) U LAYTON 544-26- 69 Second Level Layton Hills Man Bountiful Fitness Most couples do not need the guidance of a marriage counselor to keep their marriage together, but many couples could benefit from guidance in communication skills.
