The battalion, which is affiliated with the First Battalion, 84th Field Artillery in the State of Washington, worked with that unit during the two week training program. One of the highlights of the camp was the Army Training Evaluation Program Test (ARTEP), which was by the unit. This passed test includes extensive training in night movement, land navigation, special weapons, including nuclear test capabilites, and live firing of howitzers. nt The 222nd was one of six units in the nation to be administered the ARTEP test this year. The men and officers were transported by plane from Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. However, there were 19 units from the six units in the battalion which were driven to the site, near Tacoma, Wash., in convoy to provide equipment and personal gear belonging to the men. The howitzers used in training were provided by the Washington National Guard. Lt. Col. Randy Ence, battalion commander, said the units receive training about every third year. Other years training is done in Utah with headquarters at Camp Williams in south Salt Lake County. te The 222nd is made up of units from Cedar City, Richfield, Manti, Beaver, Fillmore and St. George. 1a I 18, 1983 The Satina Sun 11 |
