Mosquito Abatement District Should Be Created In County The Sevier County Commission moved in the right direction this summer when they began an emergency mosquito control program as a result of flooding throughout the county. The spraying for the pesky insects has been carried out throughout the county over a period of several weeks, being repeated several times. And from reports and observation, the program has helped. Because of the flooding, the worst in the county in over 60 years, additional water, spread over surfaces which hadnt seen water for years, helped to breed mosquitos and put them all over the county in numbers generally greater than usual. But it is the usual thing which the county also needs to look at. In other words, Sevier County has an annual mosquito problem, not as great, perhaps as this particular year, but nevertheless, a mosquito problem. Because of the effectiveness of this years program, and because of the general need for mosquito control, we hope the commission will set up a mosquito abatement district and include its funding as a regular part of its budget. With such a program, commissioners dont have to wait for an emergency situation, such as this year, to move toward controlling mosquitos. And spraying and other measures can begin early in the year, when the pests can be controlled before they become so wide spread. Earlier this year, petitions were signed and presented to the commission for such an abatement district, but before action could be taken and such a district treated, it was too late in the season. However, the emergency program was initiated and some of the problem alleviated at least for this year. Now that the mosquito problem has been met head-oand the type of control being used has proven generally effective, we hope Sevier County Commissioners will move toward a permanent abatement program, and set up an abatement district as part of the regular county mosquito control prooperations to assure a year-roun- d must be considered not which and gram, just something an emergency.
