Show The Salina Sun 8-- B ' Thursday, May Buckle-U- p 26, 1983 It Makes Cents Urged by I pledge, for the next two weeks, to buckle-up- , to protect children by placing them in safety belts orchild safety seats, and to encourage my fellow passengers to get into the buckle-u- p habit. Thats the Make It Click-Driv- e Defensively safety belt usage pledge, and youre encouraged to take it, said Robert Ingersoll, managing director fa- the Utah Council. Safety This year the Utah Safety Council is participating in the National Safety Councils Make It Click- Drive Defensively campaign which runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Volunteers across the country will be asking their friends and neighbors to sign the pledge. Hopefully, after persons see how easy it is to use the belts, theyll continue wearing them, Ingersoll said.1 According to the Utah Safety Council 14,000 to 18,000 lives could be saved yearly if all passengers in motor-vehiclwore safety belts at all times. Ingersoll said that safety belts are BY VI JUDGE Dear Vi: Since fly time is here, I want to tell those who dont already know, how we mended our screens to make I them last another season. Cut a piece of screen about an inch larger all around than the hole. Pull wires out of the edges of the patch until you have a fringe on all sides. Position tne patch ova: the hole and weave these loose wires into the surrounding screen. Another, way is to skip the fringing and with someone helping you on the other side, sew the patch in place with a length of screen wire pulled loose. One pokes it through, while the " helper pokes it back, stitching fashion. While painting the bedrooms this spring, we also painted the window shades, as they had become cracked and dirty looking. Its easy to do if you lay them flat and use a roller. We did one side, let that dry, and then did the other side the next day. They look like new again. When money is tight, its easy to let up, using that as an excuse. We find it boosts our morale to take time and whatever money can be spared to improve the home, or at least keep it well maintained. Rick and Marsha You are so right. God bless you for your optimism and courage. Dear Vi: Forget ziplock bags for silverware. Ten or more years ago, I found in my local grocery store plastic boxes with divided trays, perfect for silverware. Two of these have stored my silverware, and the only polishing Ive dona is an d&' casional piece that I carelessly failed to put away properly. Velma Sullivan, New Castle, Utah Another suggestion from my experience. Dont ever put a rubber band around a stack of forks, spoons, or whatever when putting . your silverware away. I did once, and, oh, the heavy ring of tarnish that resulted. As Velma says, . - silverware doesnt tarnish when protected from the air. Dear Vi: Always stir baking powder before measuring it, especially if you have had it for quite awhile. Even the small amount of air between the lid and the powder can make the top layer ineffective. Thus, if you measure it off die top, it will not have its full leavening power and you may have a baking failure. AdaM. retired nurse told me the other day that milk of magnesia was used' in the hospital where She worked to relieve the burning and itching of a patients skin in the rectal area caused by severe diarrhea. I remember my mother giving Milk of A Magnesia internally for this problem and other rashes, so I am also going to try it externally whenever there is such a problem in my family. An idea from a friend has me busy making Christmas tree ornaments personalized by pictures of family members. The frames are the rings you pull off plastic milk jugs to release the lids so that they can be screwed off.- First, crochet allf around the ring with baby yam or heavy crochet thread in desired color or colors. Add a crocheted edge as elaborate as you wish to frame the face that will be glued inside the circle. Add a loop at the top for attaching to the tree. Im making one of these mini frames for the picture of each of my loved ones. It seems that almost everyone I meet has a good idea to share. - George, Utah newspaper. 84770, or in care of this .
