Fire Department Deserves Larger Share of Budget Editoral The people who decide the La von Wade Forsyth Most Valuable Senior Athlete Award chose two of the Chief Albrecht describes the great work that the volunteer fire department is doing and makes a plea for the city council to approve a bigger budget for the department. We believe that the departments that protect the lives of the citizens of any community deserve the largest share of the money allocated. Chief Albrecht lists several valid reasons besides protection of life, why the fire departments budget should be increased. The point here is not the money, although every effort should be made by the city council to keep our fire department above par; the point is that somehow our dedicated men fighting North Sevier fires have been led to believe that they are not appreciated. If that is not true, the people the citizens and those have a strange way of showing it. who lead this city How can towns to the south of us manage to have more adequate fire departments than Salina? What will cost more higher taxes which could result from improving the department or higher fire insurance rates if we do not? A few years ago I went to the doctor complaining about my somnambulism. Oh, he said, you have trouble with sleepwalking!! I replied. Theres no No, I do it quite well. Well, problem. my sleep walking was supposedly like everything else when youre going through your teenage years just a stage. Somethings messed up in the metabolism, I guess because Im still up in the night. My roommates think Im quite amusing. Ill get up and' putter around the room, rearraning the from shelves, moving knick-knack-s one place to another, or pulling all the covers off my bed. When they ask what on earth Im doing I usually mumble something, get mad and storm off to bed. The trouble is Im awake enough to know what Im doing, and asleep enough to have it not make any sense, yet it seems logical to me. The best way to show any community entity that its work is appreciated is to work with them to find ways to increase their budget and help maintain and improve the quality of work being done. The Salina Volunteer Fire Department deserves such appreciation and forts. ef- Hie other night I woke up in the middle of the living room, perched upon the couch. Lee is an excellent student, a superb athlete, he is polite and always ready to lend a hand. He is devout in his religious beliefs and I have been impressed with the stands he has taken so as not to offend what he believes to be right and correct. I have just one addition of my own. When I say this, I do not mean that the decisions of those in charge were wrong. In this case the decision simply did not go far enough. We encourage the residents of North Sevier and particularly of Salina, to read the letter to the editor published on this page of The Salina Sun this week from the Salina Volunteer Fire Chief Rusty Albrecht. By the time this column is seen in print, it will be just hours before Lee I agreed with the choices on every one of the awards I saw given or read about. When Im up in the night and someone asks if Im awake IU usually reply, Yes, Im awake. Im not asleep. And then I try to explain what it is that Im doing. A few months ago my roommate woke up as I was pushing the bottom of her bed. Jan, what are you doing? Are you awake? Yes, Im awake. Come help me push the raft off the sand bar. It makes perfect sense if you know where the raft is! Its really embarrassing to wake up in the middle of doing something really stupid and know that a few seconds before it seemed totally logical. Whats really frustrating is to get up and really be awake, maybe to go to the bathroom or to get a drink, and have someone ask Are you asleep? Im No, awake. Which is usually responded to with much skepticism Right! lets go back to bed. No, Yes, we know, really Im awake. Jan. lets iust go back to bed!
