Senior Jeff Rodeman, North Sev- iers Sterling Scholar candidate in art, has created a southern Utah landscape out of brown, beige, gold, yellow and rust colored carpet for a mural sixteen feet long and eight feet high. Located just across from the main office, the mural was designed by the student following the architects suggestion that such a work of art would enhance the hallway in that part of the building. According to art teacher Jill Sorensen, Jeff used some leftover carpet that was used in the school following the selection of the cast. More than one million people have attended the pageant since its beginning, and each year well over 100,000 people come to witness the production. There will be a lot of transportation changes, with all traffic from the north having to come along either through Salt Creek Canyon or across from Levan to Gunnison on Utah 28 and to Manti. Consider two widely different classics Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Both have been used i by Hollywood. Movies not withstanding, the reading of these books will provide a dimension that viewing the triovie cannot duplicate. In Jane Eyre", Miss Bronte seems to touch on the sensitive inner feelings that every woman can relate with. The time and place appear to be secondary (though essential) to the message about maturing .womanhood. Using a similar format, hundreds of writers of todays Gothic novels seem to attempt tq create again the scene of intrigue, suspense, joy and pain and intense emotion that live on so tunelessly in Jane Eyre. But the i popular novels cant seem to fully duplicate the classical essence of by this talented , feeling portrayed women of another age. In contrast to the melancholy atmosphere of Jane Eyre, John Steinbeck sets his fans solidly into a time and place. The impact of the great depression of the 1930s in America come smashing in to his readers. One comes to know the irreversible tragedy of hopes and with the dreams evaporating in a dispossessed mortgage, people land of plenty. Starving wanderers watch as farmers destroy crops and animals rather than sell at a loss. The immigrant flood to California chokes resources, destroys homes and defies the American dream to true. As surely as this tragic , come event is part of our history, The Grapes of Wrath will continue to be a masterpiece. This revival of modestly successful stories, (i.e; Rich Man, Poor Man, by Irwin Shaw, etc.) creates the question about the classic value that some authors can build into a book. The only cost incurred was for the lumber and sheetrock that went into the frame, and the glue to put the carpet in place. A lot of detail isnt really possible in a graphic medium like carpet, Mrs. Sorensen explained. Low pile carpet was used to suggest distance, while deeper pile carpet was used in the foreground to suggest nearness.
