Nielson and Ogden urologist Dr. Dean Packard recently discussed the causes and approaches to with about 40 frustrated parents. The workshop, sponsored by the Parents Education Resource Center, was held April 13 at the Monte Vista Center in Farmington. Nielson stressed to the parents that, YOU do not have the problem, your child does. The child is in control, and, you are the assistant. Theres nothing in the world you can do to keep that urine in the bladder. The child has to do it. He told the group that any of the various methods used to stop will work for some, but not everyone. (Some of the parents present said they had tried everything.) One solution is a tranquilizer-typ- e drug called inipramine, which causes the child to sleep more lightly. Dr. Packard said when using inipramine and other drugs, some children experience side effects such as insomnia, nightmares, agitation during the day, or even deeper sleep. Or, he cautioned, a child eager to stay dry at night may overdose on the drug. Tip-off- foul-smelli- ng Mushrooms hunted in spring DARLENE MIX Lakeside Review columnist One of my fondest memories of and hunting for mushrooms in the northern woods of Michigan. At the end of an old dusty road, the cabin sat deep in the woods. A bridge had to be built from spring was staying at a cabin logs, by family members, over a small stream to allow them to reach the one room cabin. It was like going back in time to the turn of the century, because there was no electricity or indoor plumbing. In the middle of the stove. cabin sat a Along the lower wall were wood one-roo- pot-belli- m ed en cupboards with an old wooden ice box. On the sink was a hand pump. An old wooden table with claw legs occupied one side of the room. Oil lamps for lighting at night and old pictures hung on the wall. In the back of the cabin were double bunk beds, with curtains pulled around them. The outhouse sat out back. The purpose of the cabin was for use by deer hunters, but my favorite pastime was walking through the woods in the spring looking for mushrooms. The kind I hunted were the morels. They grew 4 inches high, and were pitted like a sponge. The stem was white, the cap and cells creamy tan. They grew in the moist woods in early spring and were the most delicious of all mushrooms. It was entertaining to walk through the woods over the ruffled leaves from last autumns foliage, looking for the mushrooms. I saw spring flowers wild violets, buttercups, lilies, and It was peaceful there in the woods and I frequently saw a variety of birds and d deer and their fawns. Because the mushrooms grew thick in the north woods you had to be careful not to step on them. cone-shape- d, it. white-taile- 3-- Stepfamilies need to adjust Be patient, JO-AN- understanding says development specialist CALLAHAN Lakeside Review correspondent FARMINGTON The tales of the evil stepmother or stepfa- ther probably were started when was a rare occurence. But with todays divorce rates, stepparenting is becoming common. The adjustments involved in blending two families are very step-parenti- complex. Tom Lee, Utah State University j b 4 ( r Extension family and human development specialists, said new family relationships of respect and acceptance may take two to three years or longer. Lee said it is important that stepfamily members realize this and be patient, allowing plenty of time to work through differences. He suggests the new stepparent seek the support of spouse, friends, religious leaders and other stepparents. Be there for your stepchildren, but allow them time to learn to trust and respect you, he said. At first strive to be a friend rather than a substitute parent. In the beginning, most discipline should be handled by the biological parent. Respect the strong bond that exists between the children and both biological parents. Allow them plenty of time together and avoid interfering where issues are not of your concern, Lee said. He also suggests the biological parent include the new spouse in the existing family unit, but let relationships between the step The abundant crop of mushrooms was taken to the cabin where enough for a meal was soaked in salt water and rinsed, then dipped in flour and fried in butter. They were delicious, but you had to be careful not to eat too many as they were very rich. I remember the year 1953, when we brought back one bushel crate, a cooler full, and a big box full of mushrooms that we shared with neighbors and friends. Its been 30 years since I visited that cabin, and much too long since I tasted the delicious mushrooms found in the northern woods of Michigan.
