Show Religion and worship review Wednesday October 21, 1987 7D( 'Remember ideals IDS Young Women told JO-AN- CALLAHAN Lakeside Review correspondent SALT LAKE CITY This is an historic time for the young women of the church, said G. Kapp, president of the Young Women organization of the LDS Church. It is a time when they need to be spiritually Ar-de- th 'Enjoy this time of life. Hold your torches high. Remember, the lighting of the nation begins with the light of the young women Ardeth G. Kapp LDS Young Women president strong. The Young Women fireside in the tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City Oct. 18 introduced a new vision and focus for the young women of the church. In 1985 we sent out a call for greater righteousness and introduced the young women to that they should work toward. We talked about standing together, said Mrs. Kapp. Fol- -. low the Savior and his example. Help light the way for others to thev-alu- es follow. ; Mrs. Kapp then presented the ;new Young Women logo, a torch, with the motto Stand for Truth and Righteousness. The torch represents the light of Christ. Elaine Jack, second counselor in the General Young Womens presidency spoke to the Beehives, the age group 3 years old. They were encouraged to have an increse in faith. Youth is not a disadvantage. Many will follow you. It is a time to share your talents with your family and friends. Remember to go to your heavenly father in prayer, he knows your needs, she said. Jayne Malan, first counselor, told the girls to read the scrip tures every day. They are a priceless gift from your Father in Heaven. Radiate the joy of your testimony. Show your love by helping each other," Mrs. Malan said. Mrs. Kapp talked to the girls She said, Call upon ages the Lord to help you. You are not alone. Give thanks and serve one another. Have the moral courage to do what is right. The women presented a mission statement for each age group. The mission statement is to give identity, purpose and direction to the Young Womens activities. These 12-1- 16-1- 8. are to provide a foundation for growth in gospel knowledge through experiences that help build testimonies. A symbol for each of the age groups was also presented. The symbols will help remind the young women of the spiritual values and commitments that set them apart from the standards of the world. In the past, each girl in the program completed goals in an area of focus for personal progress. The personal progress program helped the girl reach for goals and then set new ones. Now the young women will set goals related to the Young Women Values that were presented to the church in 1985. The Young Women will choose two experiences each year based on each value for their personal progress requirements. We believe the young women of the church are ready for a women. President Thomas S. Monson, a counselor in the church First Presidency, then spoke to the audience. You have a heritage; honor it; shun sin; live truth; share your testimony. We must not let our passions destroy our dreams, he said. He then cautioned the girls to choose Set an example for others. When we cultivate faith we dispel doubt. Set high ideals for yourselves. High ideals are like stars, you cant touch them but you can follow them. He told the young women and their leaders, What is selfishly kept, we lose but what we give away, we keep. Give yoyr testimony to others. friends wisely. We tend to become like those that we admire. Make sure your friends are what you want to be, he said.
