Show AC Lakeside Review, Wednesday, September 9, 1987 Cooler temperatures, lower water help fishermen Cooler night temperatures are lowering the temperature of the waters and making it easier to catch fish near the surface and from shore. After a comparatively dry summer, many of the rivers, streams and reservoirs are at the lowest theyve been in years. That can be a blessing and a cursing to the fisherman, depending on where and how he likes to fish. While the temperature remains warmer in the shallow waters, the fish also tend to pool in the good cover areas that remain. The Division of Wildlife Resources latest fishing report fol- few weeks; backcountry lakes stocked with fingerling by aircraft; should be excellent; if no luck, move to the next lake. Heavy precipitation during the last four years have kept water at near spillway levels. This year is a different story, says Gordon Tenney, Information Specialist for Utah Division of Parks and Recreation. Some reservoirs have been drawn down below the halfway point and continue to drop as much as 12 inches a day. New sand and gravel bars and rock croppings are appearing everyday at various reservoirs. Draw down is expected to continue through To avoid problems boaters should: Slow down when operating near shore lines and harbor areas. Have an observer watch for submerged objects when coming to or leaving shore lines. Check with park personnel at the lake or reservoir for an update before venturing on the water. Report problems to park ranger. There are some advantages to lower lake levels, says Tenney. Beach areas are significantly increased and boaters tend to spread out over the entire perimeter of the lake. Fish populations are also concentrated into smaller areas making fall fishing trips more productive. For boaters wanting to become more knowledgeable about safe boating, a free home study course booklet entitled, Utah Boating Basics is now available.
