Show A forum for opinion - September 9, 1987 Letters to group Pro-executi- on influenced by LDS? Lakeside Review editor The news reports concerning the execution of Pierre Dale Selby brought tears to my eyes. Pm sure you know the answer. The crimes that this man did were heinous to say the least. He caused much pain to many people. Pm truly sorry that there are people still suffering because of his actions. He certainly was a tool of Satan that day so long ago. Pd venture to guess that their pain and hurt hasnt lessened now that Selby no longer breathes. Two wrongs dont make a right. No one hates crime more than' I do. Pm sick and tired of people worrying about the rights of criminals, when the rights of victims are overlooked. The term justice system is an oxymoro. Hardened criminals that can afford an expensive, high-claattorney can be on the streets again to seek out more victims. It makes me mad and it makes me sick at heart. But what is the purpose of our prison system? Is it to waste millions of dollars on worthless flesh, or is it to perpetrate rehass - bilitation?. its eview r iviia Wednesday editor trusted, and valued friend. Huston Kaysville Police lose respect of Kaysville reader Lakeside Review editor I believe a grave injustice has occurred in the city of Kaysville and I have been saddened that more letters to this effect have not been written. This summer an outstanding police officer was reprimanded and demoted for doing his job. His police record stands blemished and his chances for future law enforcement employment greatly diminished. He resigned from the force because his own faith in the judicial system of justice had been distorted if not destroyed. Kaysville lost not only a fine policeman but my respect. I have spoken with men who are involved with the city council, the mayor, the chief of police, etc.; their comments have been, well, theres a lot of good ol boys in city government and they stick up for each other. Werent they just afraid of a lawsuit? Is our city run by honorable men? Why does an officer, trying to maintain law and order, get a reprimand and a cut in pay? I no longer feel safe in Kaysville. Whenever I see a policeman I feel pity. I wonder if another policeman would be willing to come to my aid if he feared reprisal from the offender and questioned the support of his chief and fellow officers. the latter of Think about it Davis County. course. After having the pleasure of all my children literally working and obtaining their bachelors degree from the worthy Weber College, Im again impressed by their further advanced studies at the learned Utah State University. This spring my oldest child to my youngest each received 4.0 grades for their striving towards the advanced degrees of teaching from Utah State University. The humanities and English professors from the Utah State University are another treasure to the state of Utah. In my estimation they are true builders of public confidence. Students earnestly striving and working can reap from their academic efforts and this universities teaching; hence we cant help but to help achieve better social justice. I am especially satisfied by the English, journalistic and humanities fields my children have pursued and attained to enrich their professional teaching fields. This included importantly the contribution of the free American Press our last vestige of freedom. All this contributes to help undo pessimism that surrounds American education and even I must say the allied health fields Ive had to personally encounter during my life. Sometimes I wonder if there are enough teeth to go around for all the dentists on the bloated Wasatch front. Teachers can save lives as surely and successfully as doctors or policemen. In fact, I believe, an effective teacher can still be an architectural designer for this great nation of people. Utah State University, I salute your professional teachers. I thank you.
