Roy coach Fred Thompson is determined the Royals 195 seniors Steve Stromberg, 180. and Rob Saunders The defense will be the key to a successful season according to Thompson. We expect to be better on this year. Last season we didnt stop many people and we gave up a lot of points. Because of a lack of depth, from which most high school teams suffer; the Royals will have several offensive players filling defensive Roy 6-- 2, From 3C 180 pound senior Morgan, a will likely start at the tight end spot. With good size in the backfield the Royals hope to keep opposing defenses guessing with a balanced offensive attack. 6-- 1, Well run with our fullback said from a tight slot set, Thompson, and with a 4 quarterback we will be able to step back a throw as distance and down indicate. Well run and n to keep throw some the defenses honest. I think we mix will have about a of passing and running. The offensive line will play a key role in the Royals ability keep the ball moving. The other starting tackle position is up for grabs between Shawn Bell a 200 junior and sophomore Tyree Opheikens. 6-- 0, 6-- 0, Tafoya and German will be joined at linebacker slots by 0 175 senior Gary McFarland. The secondary will include Jorgenson and Flint, along with Steve Nye 190 senior at strong side safeScott Tracy (6-and 175) as ty the free safety. Look for the Royals to run a defensive set with a four deep secondary, with a 2 thrown in occasionally to mix things up a bit. They will blitz as ability and opportunity permit, according to Thompson. 5-- Our defense has to be our strength if we are to be successful this year, Thompson noted, followed by the kicking game and we should be okay there. If our offense can take advantage of what the defense can give us then we can beat some people. Our weakness right now would be our depth on the lines, which I hope will be corrected by the region play starts, Thompson continued. And also our size is a concern, but we have some good speed and quickness in a lot of positions. 6-- 6-- 0, 0, Roy kicks off the 1986 campaign this Friday at 7:30 against cross-tow- n rival Ben Lomond at home. The Royals will then meet Ogden and Bountiful on the road before opening league play at Clearfield on September 19. t ji- 1 3 St s t V4rK 6 f Staff photos by Rodney Wright Roy will be small and light as a team this year, but will rely on player quickness and agility, which traits these box drills help to develop. court ALLAN HASH course North Davis Conservation Officer With the slight chill in the air, bird hunting seasons are already on their way and it is time for Davis County dove, grouse, pheasant, and waterfowl hunters to begin thinking about birding again. The dove hunt will be the first season to kick off the hunting fever on September and will run until Sept. 30. with a daily bag limit of 15 birds and 30 birds for a possession limit. A major migration of doves was observed in Davis County during the first week of August, and dove numbers may be down as a 1 result. Last year most of the doves in the county had moved out well in advance of previous years to leave most hunters with the poorest season in many years. Cold temperatures are the most important factor in speeding the dove migration along and since this has been the second coolest summer on record to date, that factor certainly isn't in the hunt- - ers favor. If the ripening of peaches is any k indication of a advance on schedules then the dove mi-- ! gration is again two weeks earlier than previous years. Peaches ripening two weeks earlier two-wee- be-.g- .this year. At the present time unless a new migration moves through the county it appears as if dove numbers will be done. Hunters are to seek a copy of the 1986 Dove Proclamation at any store where hunting and fishing licenses are sold.
