Often, when a coach realizes he is going to start any more than three underclassmen and they must be exceptionally talented he starts looking for euphemisms. But not Hancock. Were going to be young. Well pro.bably start seven or eight juniors. But, hey, weve just got to go out there and play our best and continually improve and then make it into the state playoffs," Hancock said. Sounds easy when put that way, but the veteran mentor knows it is all the hard work between July and October that will make it happen. Every coach in the state has to rebuild his team every year, so we're no different than anybody else, Hancock said. The Falcons do have some skilled youngsters to fill holes on the team, but that can be a formidable task when you consider holes left by the likes of last year's stars: Craig Carter and Vaun Waite to name just two. But there's been a slight change in philosophy by Hancock and his staff this year, and hes looking to that to help make a difference. The last couple of years we've tried to put our best players on defense and then we tried to keep them off the field on offense to make it easier on them, or whatever, he said. But this year the Falcons are unabashedly keeping their best players on the field for both offense and defense. "Our better players are just going to have to be in better shape," Hancock said. And then weve got to hope everybody stays healthy, he added. The Falcons have already had some bad luck in the staying healthy department. Quarterback Gene Smith, who was battling Tim Gardner stride for stride for the starting position, was pulled to the grass last week and suffered a broken collarbone. The injury may well put him out for the season. The injury was particularly costly because the two quarterbacks, both juniors, were battling closely for the top spot, and whoever became second string would have gotten some good experience quarterbacking the junior - .y ( f N W . f A Xivi i if if V4 4 yI 1 ' ' - i4.it 4 i W v . & , ' '4 4? Weve got. to move the ball better than we did last year. Weve got to be able to run the football, so we can dictate when we throw. Weve got to stay away from or situations, Hancock said. And to do that the Falcons are supplementing their playbook with schemes that should, allow them more versatility. Offensively, aside from Gardner, who now has a lock on the quarterback slot, the center will Hancock and his crew are looking ahead at the season with optimism, tempered by realism. Our philosophy is to go out there and do the best we can every week and try to get better every week. We also have a one-gam- e goal, second-down-and-lo- and at the end of the season we want to be in the playoffs. Its not our goal to go 10-- Its not our goal to win the region. It doesnt make any difference if you do those things if you dont make the state playoffs," Hancock said.
