Show I r Lakeside Review, Wednesday, March 26, 1986 3B Forgotten mementos prove Mom was person once too SHARON NAUTA STEELE Except for a magic marker scrawled note warning to unauthorized intruders on the top, it was a rather ordinary looking box plain green, just the right size to hold about a thousand 4X6 recipe cards. Only I never put a single recipe in it. Rather, from the time I entered seventh grade until sometime, wouldnt close, Id stuffed that during my freshman year at colbox with letters. lege when it got so full the lid d notes passed across two rows of American History, folded bits of stationary, and tattered envelopes with circled return addresses had all found their way into the box. At first Id kept everything alphabetized. Smith, Renee was a post card from a vacationing cousin. Nauta, Marti was a note from my younger sister. But after a while, new additions to the file were stuffed in anywhere and any way theyd fit, until the box could hold no more, and Id tucked it in some corner of my parents home and eventually forgotten it was there. Then one night, almost 20 years later, my mother got it out and sat it in the middle of her kitchen table where my children and I sat playing Yahtzee after a family dinner. How those kids laughed at the childish inscriptions on the top; This is my file. Keep Out! Violators will be persecuted! No, I said, remembering the pesky little brother who was most often the violator as far as the contents of the box were concerned. Persecuted was the perfect word. Or, This girl named Linda sure tells stale jokes! And then again, Mother, I cant believe you actually threw your roommates bra out the dormitory window during a panty raid!
