At a public meeting last week a large crowd, mostly Farmington residents, voiced their concerns about possible jail sites to Davis County and Sheriffs Depart-me- nt officials. To find a sample of opinions the Lakeside Review conducted interviews of Davis ; County residents. Commissioner Harold Tippetts was asked to present the official county position. Street talk Harold Tippetts Harold Tippetts, Davis County Commissioner If we have 'people who are committing crimes and penalize them with ; ! incarceration, you have to have a jail. The present (Davis County) jail is at capacity. As the county grows and the proportionate crime rate grows, the question is, do we incarcerate or do we let them run the streets? Its that simple. We need a new jail absolutely. The prognostication says our population will double in 25 years and we cannot expect the crime rate to reduce. The indication is that it will be the same or even increase. It would be nice to see on the horizon that people are more law abiding in the future but I cant see it now. If we don't pursue this within the reasonable future the courts would mandate it. And if that were to occur then we would lose a lot of options in the sizing and siting of the facility. Any way we go we will need to impact the people and that is undesirable. With the bonding with the flooding it hurts the taxpayer. Heidi Hodson, West Point If they need it then they should do it. And if they dont need one then they shouldnt build another jail. No, they shouldnt let state prisoners in there. Its a lot of money but if they think its worth it then its okay. I Kaylene Furse, Layton back-to-ba- ck think it is warranted, and I think they need it. Nobody wants to pay taxes on it but I think we need it They can put it anywhere but by my house - maybe on Antelope Island. Id like to see the convicts make money while in the jail and pay for it themselves. I think it will fill up fast enough without letting state prisoners in. John Blomquist, Farmington Theyll have to build a jail and theyve already got the ground and its three-quarte- rs Sandra Low John Blomquist Kaylene Furse Heidi Hodson paid for. I Sandra Low, Farmington the on build should think they And they bought it at a depressed value. Theyll be buying the ground now at full price. The ground is in Kaysville and theyre not going to build nothing on it. If they dont build on it it will just grow weeds. As far as a racetrack is concerned (as use for the land), we horse people know differently. We go to Brigham City for chariot and Evanston for flat track. What irks me is they are buying this other ground and its land where there are the fewest residents. That would be the best place for it. If they increase taxes its just our money. I suppose there's no in the governors budget money for a jail. Its a bad year for building with Gramm-Rudma- n and all. Id hate for it to be bond- ed. I dont think the people should pay for all of it. Letters to the editor they dont want to be like the same sexed parent. With regards to personal opinions, Mr. Martins have certainly not been immaterial in recent weeks as he has launched attacks on the U.S. Attorneys office, H.B. 209 and teenagers. Isnt promiscuous Martin doing just what he accused others of using his office to lobby the legislature? As a taxpayer and resident of Davis County, I object to the use of county prosecutors, court time and tax dollars for Mr. Martin to play intellectual games or gain free publicity in an election year. Shouldnt we prosecute the real criminals and leave stunts and legal debates to law school? If you must grandstand, Mr. Martin, please do it on your ow n time and with your own money!
