She became president of the Kaysville Chamber of Commerce and is a member of Chambers of Commerce in Layton, Kaysville and Clearfield, cities where her shops are located. As her business grew, so did her plans. In 1979 she opened a larger shop in Layton, followed by another shop in Clearfield two years after that. In 1983, she opened Fran Brown and Company College of n Beauty and Career Center in to teach and train future cosLay-to- metologists. The school is so successful there is a waiting list to register for her custom program. She would like to open another school in the Ogden area in a few years, she said. She and her instructors use a system of teaching designed by Mrs. Brown to help meet the needs of each of her graduates. I know our system works because of the response we get from people who want to hire our students, she said. But to Mrs. Brown, graduating a student who can give a good hair cut or perm isnt enough. She said todays students are d than in the more Cheerful attitude is shown in expression on Browns face as she directs beauty career-oriente- past and they, too, need to learn to balance their lives with work and family so they can feel successful in what they choose to do. She said she even incorporates meal planning and time scheduling into her courses to help the female students become aware of the planning it takes to make that balance happen. She said she has seen two types of women who are not successful at working outside their homes and also having a career: women who are forced to work and resent it and suffer because of it, and those who find work so glamorous that they never go home and their families suffer. There has to be a balance, she said, a- balance between work and family. If you key into them, you can do it. She said she felt the womens movement has hurt rather than helped women who want to work outside their homes. They should have been teaching women organizational skills - Teaching cosmetology students how to man- age their time as well as create flattering hairstyles, Fran Brown is a popular instruc- -' tor at her beauty college. shop operations in three cities while manag-Fra- n ing home and family. rather than to rebel, she said. Even local schools should be teaching calendering, organizational skills, and PMA 101, according to Mrs. Brown. PMA," or positive mental attitude, is a source of Mrs. Browns strength. She encourages her employees and students to be cheerful and have a good attitude about their work, both with each other and with customers. Keeping busy keeps your mind off yourself and your own problems, she said. The ability to leave work at work when she goes home is another habit Mrs. Brown said a working woman should develop. She likes slogans, like do it now, and when the going gets tough, the tough get going, and she said her children pick up on the slogans and are learning organizational skills for themselves. But it has been basic hard work, not just a good attitude and helpful slogans, that has made Fran Brown so successful, and its a good work ethic that she hopes to teach in her school, shops and home. Good PMA is great as long as you bust your buns too! she said with a burst of enthusiasm so typical of her personality. Mrs. Brown is the first to admit she might not be able to accomplish all she does without the support of her family and friends. Her husband helped with the business end of her shops from the beginning and when the growth reached the? point last year ' that they were advised they need he came on someone board in that capacity. Her son and daughter help out frequently also, both with physical and emotional support. She said she has good managers in her shops who help to ease the load and instructors in her school are recognized as top throughout the state, making it easier for her to teach as well as see to other company obligations. full-tim- e, Cherry Hill hums with more projects FRUIT HEIGHTS As earth an attempt to duplicate an actual movers hum and cement is river.
