RUTH MALAN Review correspondent A child who KAYSVILLE has difficulty following directions, listening to his teacher and disrupts the class, may have learning disabilities. Some children dont have the skills to cope with the educational environment, said Mary Spence, a resource teacher at Columbia Elementary School. Gov. Norm Bangerter declared the month of October as Learning Disability Month, bringing more attention to the 12 percent of the school-ag-e population who have learning disabilities. Children with academic or behavior related problems may need individual counseling to develop social and behavioral nt for development, correction, or remediation of academic skills as well as behavioral skills, explained Ms. Spence. The regular classroom teacher or parents may refer a student for testing and evaluation for the program. The procedures for evaluation and placement of students into the program follow the state and federal guidelines for special education services. After an individualized education plan has been written and accepted by the resource team and the parents,, the student may be enrolled in the program. Once the student has been placed into the program, further evaluation and diagnosis enables the re-- 1 source teacher to focus on the specific strengths and weaknesses of the student.
