While all classes utilize all three skills, the subjects dictate a varying balance of the three for optimum learning. Shop, P.E., home ec, band, art and music are examples of subjects more heavily weighted toward the physical area. There are things to be memorized and things to be thought out, but they are best learned by total physical involvement. They said he had a high IQ and I guess he must have because his math came up to grade level right away. However, his reading is still way down. Shouldnt his reading have come up, too? Are they good at teaching math and poor reading teachers? How can I tell? Thanks. T.L. th Dear T.L., In the academic learning process there are three general categories of skills: those which of theorizing tion andor determining causes and effects: What happens if I do this? What if I change this? How does this happen? etc. Math and health are representative of subjects relying heavily on memorization. In math, basic facts and basic processes are learned and then repeated in a diversity of ways. The other two skills are necessary, but if facts and processes can be memorized, class room math can be mastered. Health, in the adult world, is a thought weighted subject; for children in a classroom, however, it is bones, food groups, body systems, reasons for behavior, much memorization. etc. Reading actually belongs in two categories: memorization and saying thought.
