Show IOC Lakeside Review North, Wedi Marriott Speaks to Chamber Mothers Day is Sunday, May 13th Heres a Golden Opportunity to Say... BARRY KAWA Review Staff LAYTON Improving Utahs education system will be his most important goal if elect ed governor. Rep. Dan Marriott, told the Layton Cham ber of Commerce last week. Marriott, speaking via telefrom Washingphone hook-u- p ton, said students should be required to study the basics and be given competency tests throughout their schooling years. The entire education system needs to be looked at in terms of reform, Marriott said. Marriott talked briefly on what Congress is doing in the current session, his policies in his campaign for the governors office and also answered a few questions from Layton business leaders and city officials who attended the luncheon. The representative said he will propose an amendment to the Clean Air Act asking for the removal of scrubber requirements on western coal plants. Utah coal mines are below national air standard requirements without the expensive scrubbers which add an additional 10 percent cost to electricity and keeps eastern coal prices competitive with western coal, Marriott said. Its a battle between east and west, he explained. Marriott also voiced concern over pending House Bill 5504 which changes the funding formula on the amount states receive for federal highway funds. The bill would delete the highway mileage factor in the federal funding formula and cut Utahs allocation from $31 million to $17 million, he said. In response to a query from Layton Mayor Lewis Shields, Marriott said he would welcome letters from local mayors and officials for the record when they testify against the bill. Marriott said he was meeting with Air Force officials to get an explanation for the high number of 6 crashes and then determine if an investigation is in order. He said he is a great supporter of the sophisticated 6 but has heard from Air Force pilots who claim the plane is equipped with too much F-1- F-1- crap. Id like to get to the bottom of this, he said. I intend to find out if theres any truth to there being so much stuff on the plane they dont need that it enhances the accident frequency. If elected governor, Marriott said he would try to stimulate economic development in Utah by encouraging industries and businesses to relocate here. He also said a program would be developed to double tourism to the state because most of the current Utahns touring industry is Utah. We cannot simply be an isolated state, Marriott said. He also noted by increasing Utahs economic base, the states revenues would increase and allow them to not substantially increase income taxes. Five Poets Get Awards Five Davis County residents claimed eight awards at the Utah State Poetry Societys annual awards ceremonies held April 20, 21, at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
