Corp 'Platoon' smoking is shown taking place at the base camp It is a black soldier who falls asleep on watch enabling the enemy to get within several yards of the Americans and inflict casualties It is a black soldier who hoping to escape combat sprays his feet with flammable chemicals then claims he can't walk It is a black soldier who faced with being attacked by the enemy flees his jungle bunker then crashes into a tree and is knocked unconscious It is a black soldier who survives a fire fight only to stab himself in the leg with a bayonet in an effort to avoid more combat Swans' biggest complaint is that in "Platoon" the blacks aren't so much portrayed as evil (the two most vile characters in the film are white) as that they are ignored pushed to the back of the movie as if it were a bus in Selma Ala during the early '60s Swans' sentiments are echoed by black Vietnam veterans and including Garland experts Brow n 37 of Philadelphia who served in the Army infantry during 1969 and '70 "The 1st Cavalry where I was was predominantly black" said Brown now a probation counselor with the Crisis Intervention Network an organization that seeks to settle gang racial and neighborhood disputes in the city "But when they try to dramatize the war they make it look like (blacks) weren't even there or took a coward's role like we weren't really mea" Swans and the others dispute what they consider to be an undercurrent in "Platoon" that blacks didn't contribute their share staff vidWhile perusing the Top-1eo rental lists last week I was startled to see that "Psycho III" was among the week's hits After asking several people if they'd seen the original most said they hadn't but had enjoyed the two subsequent sequ ls to "Psycho" Alfred Hitchcock s 1960 classic Everyone seems able to enjoy "Psycho II" and "III" because Norman Bates is a such a character even though many people haven't seen the original They assume he's simply another slasher albeit with a severe Oedi-pcomplex But to dismiss "Psycho" as just another slasher film is a grave viewing audience The classic shower scene for example offers so many different camera angles and shots in such a short time that the viewer is certain to believe they are watching a grisly murder But through the miracle buttons on your of VCR it becomes evident that Norman Bates' carving knife never pierces Janet Leigh's flesh Vintage Video 'Psycho' mistake Hitchcock's simply told tale of murder at a rundown motel is actually a complex thriller that investigates the dark side of the human psyche leading to aberrations like voyeurism embezAnd although the technique is zlement murder and the resultant guilt and punishment astonishing the story at the heart of "Psycho" is what matters and for such transgressions Anthony Perkins paints a surprisFilmed in black and white in ingly sympathetic portrait of the troubled Norman Bates The ex1960 "Psycho" remains a shockcellent supporting cast includes ing film It contains perhaps the best examples of Hitchcock's use of editing and camera angles to achieve a desired effect on the PENNY'S Gray m s Wed Through Trr— 1 — Sat Call Sun 7 1045 No Wash Blvd (2 miles Nortti of 2nd St 5 a mum in GENERAL Ail PARENTAL DPG Soma MiUrial SuiuMt tor Miy NO ONE ® Not Ba UNDER 17 ADMITTED (Age limit mey vary ia certiie areas) 225 PG-1- Adults special puidiRca lor atlaadtica of URdM 13 Soma material nay be ipprspniu tor yottej cnugm Persons under neither rated -
