Show m 3D 13 1937 March Friday Music Hot Trio5 offers II all you nee d in way o f heir mony By RICK MARSH S:a2i'a Etamner ccxresponcJeif For anyone who's a fan of any of these three women this album is one of the most eagerly awaited records of the last five years That's about the timewhen rumors started surfacing that Dolly Parton Linda Ronstadt and Harris were planning to record an album together Of course getting the three superstar vocalists together for more than one cut on a Ronstadt or Harris album was much easier said than sung There were the demands of life on the road three separate and very diverse careers and the inevitable squabbling record companies that all wanted a piece of the action So how does this seemingly impossible labor of love sound now that it's committed to vinyl? It sounds like one of the most stunning albums of this still new year that's how it sounds First credit must go to Feat producer George Massen-bur- g who kept this project in perspective and never let anything overshadow the three exvoices that are traordinary Ronstadt Harris and Parton As for the three women well just plunk a needle down on "The Pain Of Loving You" and you'll understand everything you need to know about vocal harmony Any one of their voices brings out the best in the other two It's a very friendly competition where there are no winners or losers only a tight meshing and mixing of voices that float airily along on a sprightly bluegrass arrangement Phil Spector's classic 1950s slow stroll "To Know Him Is To Love Him" is given such loving treatment here that the flashbacks will be unavoidable for anyone who was touched by the song the first time around And David Kona Hawaiian guitar solo is so soothing that no pleasure receptor will escape its warm soothing glow I Record Review Dolly V?'- ' - : f Parton Linda Ronstadt Harris Emmylou One of side one's many highlights is Jimmie Rodgers 1933 "Hobo's Meditation" The song has everything: A slippery sliding dobro introduction a delicately plucked banjo a touching sense of humorous innocence and Ronstadt singing something besides a 1930s torch song It's also great to hear her tackle something as contemporary as Linda Thompson's "Telling Me Lies" She virtually owns any composition she lays her vocal chords on as her big alto opens up floodgates of emotion to sell the song like Madison Avenue never could classic Harris' angelic vocal on "My Dear Companion" takes center stage in a gorgeously spare arrangement that proves Massen-bur- g not only delivers music with good taste but also music that tastes good If you don't hear "Those Memories Of You" constantly in your head after hearing it twice you have a musical subconscious made of iron Albert Lee's lanky acoustic guitar lead Mark flirtatious fiddle and Dolly Parton's buoyant vocal would be enough to win over any bluegrass purist but the chiming harmonies the trio supplies on the chorus are to die for On the album's closer "Farther' Along" each lady gets to solo on a verse before they all join in on the chorus to give this spiritual wings on which to ascend beyond vocal heaven I realize the logistics of making an album like this are staggering but I hope these three huge talents can get together again soon and cut another one No big hurry Next week would be fine Hornsby Range to perform April 5 songwriter — began to write about the rural South where he was raised and his group became an "overnight" success Members of the Range are Peter Harris guitar mandolin violin George Marinella guitar vocals Joe Puerta bass vocals and drummer John Molo Tickets arc $14 and are on sale at Smith'sTix locations the Salt Palace box office and the Special Events Center Bruce Hornsby and the Range winners of a Grammy Award for the Best New Artist of 1986 will appear in concert in Salt Lake City April 5 The group whose hits include "That's Just the Way It Is" and "Mandolin Rain" will perform at 7:30 pm at the University of Utah Special Events Center After years of trying to write perfect formula pop tunes Hornsby — a singer keyboardist and nwg v The "-- frr v 9 iTl Grayson singing selections from her film musicals as well as film clips reminiscences and a session Jay Welch Choy Salt Lake City will the singer on several numbers The rale of -
