that it stepped in during the waning days of the Utah Legislature's general session last month to help kill a proposed state income flat tax "Mention has been made in media reports concerning alleged opposition by the (church) to the flat tax" church spokesman Richard P Lindsay said in a statement from the church's headquarters here "The (church) takes no position on the proposed flat tax and has never done so" the statement said Lindsay said church officials did encourage lawmakers however to keep tax deductions for charitable contributions The flat tax bill being considered by the Legislature would have eliminated deductions for charitable contributions including church tithing The bill sponsored by Rep a Mormon Craig Call had passed the House and was before the Senate during the session's last week when word quickly spread through the Capitol that the LDS Church opposed it Just days before the Legislature n d adjourned Feb 25 the Deseret News had editorialized against the flat tax bill pointing out problems over charitable contributions The flat tax — a radical change in the state income tax structure — never made it to the Senate floor Lawmakers passed another income tax bill that will raise an estimated $50 million for the state but will retain deductions ' for contributions Lindsay said church opposition to removing tax breaks for contributions is shared by charities throughout the state "Elimination of the charitable tax deduction would have adaffected not only versely churches but other charitable organizations such as the Utah Symphony United Way the Salvation Army and numerous oth' ers" Lindsay said The church statement suggested that an end to deductions for giving to charity would shrink contributions and jeopardize public services of governmental "Because spending cutbacks charities are now expected to provide for many whom government no longer serves" Lindsay said "Elimination of the charitable deductions could make it difficult if not impossible for charities to meet these increasing demands" Voyager corrects course to Neptune PASADENA Calif (AP) — The Voyager 2 spacecraft fired its thrusters today to speed up and change course so it won't smash into the boulders and rocks it might otherwise encounter when it speeds within 3100 miles of Neptune in 1989 "There's no indication it was anything but a perfect maneuver" said Lanny Miller Voyager flight engineering manager at Jet Propulsion Laboratory' w hich operates the US unmanned space exploration program for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration The probe's hydrazine thrusters fired automatically for about 70 minutes between 2 am and 3:11 am PST Then Voyager 2 spent a half hour aiming its radio trans The Ogden Ulitf&w ILir mitter at Earth At 6:37 am scthe signal ientists received confirming the trajectory change Several days of analysis are needed to be absolutely sure there are no problems Plans for the trajectory change were announced last November and NASA sent the Voyager 2 computerized orders for the adjustment several weeks ago The spacecraft is about 208 billion miles from Earth but has traveled a curving path of about 35 billion miles Miller said Voyager's speed was increased today by 20': mph to more than 43380 mph relative to the speed of the sun meaning its closest approach to the eighth planet from the sun will come at 9
