Show Letters Remember when Sex education belongs in the home Recent articles in the papers have requested some dialogue on sex education We as parents and grandparents may be well advised to clarify our thinking and determine our individual courses of action within our own homes As an idealist I've favored the position that sex education is a private parental reserve and responsibility which parents evade to their own sorrow However w ith the advent of AIDS media hype and entertainments "and new acceptable lifestyle language" even Cache County Schools may be forced to address "intimate education" in their curriculum Local teachers can be expected to teach in harmony with their value systems Americans as a whole may not be so fortunate as it must be recognized that schools are governmental agencies and as such must try to keep their presentations acceptable to all value systems This forces governmental units to an amoral (hopefully not immoral as yet) approach to most problems Avoiding the right and wrong parameters of virtue and abstinence the greater emphasis is likely to be on various forms of physical health protection While most would agree that ignorance is a curse it is not so evident that children at an even earlier age will be deprived of their beautiful innocence Stripped of innocence "for their own protection" is it not reasonable to predict increased experimentation during periods of unsuperv ised play and free time? Is it not possible that the percentage of those "messing around" might be greater than was the case under the innocence or ignorance parameters? In about 1971 when 1000 parents protested initiation of sex education to the Ogden City School Board my wife said to her uncle on the board (president of it no less) "Cant the board see it will be the one subject on which the kids will do their homework?" Chastity and abstinence appear to be the only safety for oncoming generations Perhaps all parents should request priests pastors bishops and ministers to provide classes to arm us with the w ill and ability to teach true love intimacy and procreation within our own value systems mental computers Children's should be adequately at home to handle these very sensitive subjects properly and ahead of what is taught in the schools School courses will probably be justified by parents insufficiently aware and who fail to teach their children at home the values that might reasonably be expected in a moral civilized society Curtis Hatfield Providence S35QOOO swimming pools 20 YEARS AGO March 13 1967 Political observers with an eye Maj Leroy P Bohrer of Sunset on the White House wondered was reported killed in action in just what took place in a private Vietnam while a crew member on aircraft which departed 7 an meeting between former President Dwight D Eisenhower and Nha Trang Air Base on a reconCalifornia's Gov Ronald Reagan naissance mission After conferring Z''i hours EisenGlen E Trostle 14 son of Mr hower told newsmen that Goverand Mrs Galen Trostle had renor Reagan would have to "make ceived his Eagle Scout award He his own decision" w hether to seek was a member of Troop 202 the presidency under the Republisponsored by the Trinity Presbycan banner terian Church He was an eighth A preliminary bout involving grade student at Wahlquist Junior City Council and Ogden City High School School board members as well as Final plans had been made in property owners gave some indication of what was ahead in the Plain City for the town's annual controversy over a proposal to "Homecoming" festivities Mr 29th Street east of Ogand Mrs James Fowers were celden High School The controver- ebration chairmen were Mr and Mrs Wheatley Taysy had arisen when the school board petitioned City Council to lor Others assisting in the comclose 29th to safeguard students munity affair were Kent Jenkins using athletic fields on the south Robert Wade Frank Van Meeter-e- n end of the campus and to provide Ronald Jenkins Glen Charla site for one of Ogden City's ton and Dr Carl Saunders 50 YEARS AGO March 13 1937 At the opening of the 2 1st annual convention of the Weber County Farm Bureau held in the Weber High School auditorium members heard that farmers must organize as strongly as industry and labor if they hoped to obtain parity prices for their products and receive their share of the national income George F president of the county bureau presided at the sessions Community singing was led by Ebenezer J Kirham Cost of the new city high fireschool palatial proof structure to accommodate 2000 students would overstep original figures by $222000 latest architects estimates showed Several unforeseen excavation probems changes of plans "extras" accounted for the increased expenditure Supt WK Hopkins said Joe DiMapRio sensational sophomore outfielder of the world champion New York had accepted a salary of $15000 for the 1937 season It was an increase of $6500 over 1936 The youthful slugger had asked for $17500 Hal E Daniels was elected president of Wasatch chapter International DeMolay alumni to succeed Walter E Ellingson at a meeting in the Masonic temple in Ogden Alex G Adams was named first vice president Ruth Larsson 19 Weber High School graduate and member of the Harrisville Home Science Four-Club was announced winner of the annual $100 Union Pacific scholarship contest among Four-boys' and girls' clubs of Weber Couty at the county farm bureau convention Vern McFar-lan- d Weber High School senior and member of the West Weber Four-Beef club was named alternate to the scholarship STl ROY - LAYTON l(Tjt' STORE ROY OPEN 'TIL 9 Writer voices problems with fire department Before you dismiss the recent story in the paper (March 1) as merely the accusations of disthink gruntled troublemakers twice There are some very serious problems in the South Ogden Fire Department and if the citizens remain apathetic there may be serious deficiencies in the fire protection available in South Ogden On two separate occasions Mayor Wangsgard and Councilman Day have told the members of the volunteer fire department that if they were not happy with the choice of officers and did not like the way the department is being run they could "pack their bags and get out" and "not let the door hit them in the fanny on the way out" All citizens should be concerned when men (and until March women) who voluntarily risk their lives and health to protect your lives and property are told that if they do not agree with the decisions made which very directly affect them they are not welcome Several other area volunteer fire departments have a different system than that which South Ogden uses for selecting fire department officers The officers are nominated by the members of the fire department and those nominations are presented to the coun- - If cil for consideration South Ogden City Council names its chief without benefit of nomination from the fire department members The chief selects his officers and submits those names to the council for consideration again without benefit of nomination from the fire department members It seems that members of a volunteer organization would serve better under officers which it has had some voice in nominating Perhaps citizens of South Ogden should talk to a few of the volunteer fire department members to see how they feel about the situation Then call the mayor or council members to find out just why there are problems in the fire department If the citizens of South Ogden do not stand up and take notice there may come a day when your house is on fire and no one will be there to fight the fire Because I am very closely associated with one of the members of the South Ogden Volunteer Fire Department and I fear there may be some retaliation against him if my name were published I respectfully request that my name be withheld from publication Help VJ1 us clean-u- p the store & warehouse EaSSM Name on file South Ogden Jensen Layton $1 Save on Carpet Remnants Sals Reg 12x13' Brown Sculpture 12x7 Level RustPeach Sculpture -
