The “Outcrop” reproduction led into a six page article by Carl (Snow College Art faculty) entitled “Capture the Designs of Desert Canyons” with 15 photos The designing and painting process were clearly outlined and illustrated Twelve of the photos are in color which is one of Purcell’s strongest strong points His colors are always rich and vibrant and his watercolor technique most excellent We congratulate Carl on this excellent article Patrons will remember also we mentioned his gift to the library after the AllredPurcell Exhibit last May Carl and Mrs Hunter worked out a deal where the library paid part on the painting from fund raising and he generously donated the other ly because we were Fillmore Library The painting is currently in the Poetry Corner “Many New Books" Don’t get time before the days of Christmas tree lots and twinkling lights little family living in the valley was getting ready for Christmas There was corn popping honey canand making gifts dy and gingerbread to give There was practicing music and stories for Christmas programs The little family knew that somewhere in the hills was the perfect little cedar Christmas tree to make their happiness complete One day the father said to the mother and the children “Today is the day we must go for a Christmas tree there is a storm coming the clouds are gathering in the north” The little family was warmly dressed with coats and mittens and overshoes and caps The old Chev coupe didn’t have a heater but crowded together they were warm The car traveled well on a road traveled by a wagon load of wood right up in the east hills to the edge of the cedars There a deep cover of new snow was untrampled except for the trails of rabbits and small creatures The family would walk through the snow to find the perfect tree The sagebrush and undergrowth the cedars was covered and the cedar trees were decorated with glistening white Blue jays darted between the trees reprimanding the trespassers who paid no attention but ran through the snow their breath making little puffs of frost The father laughed and said “The best Christmas tree always found away froir the car and it is always smaller on the hill than it is in the house” The children did find the perfect Christmas tree all agreed The father sawed it at the base and the father and mother carried the tree to the car while the children made trails in and out of the cedars They found some cedar misteltoe growing in the branches of a gnarled old cedar The father reached with his saw and cut enough to carry home The children sat in the snow and the mother poured warm cocoa into tin The few falling snowflakes cups melted and glistened on their cheeks Water dripped from the five pairs of overshoes snow melted on woolen caps and coats but happiness and content filled the little car and they were soon home to the warmth of the wood fire in the stove The father built a wooden stand on the little cedar and the home was filled with the fragrance of Christmas Popcorn strings paper chains the tinsel rope used year after year the red paper bells the star on top made the cedar a beautiful sight The father hung some of the mistletoe over a door frame Tne mother stood under it and it worked! The children all laughed It was truly Christmas in the little farmhouse in those early days of our valley and the little family lived happily ever after a On Sun Dec 4 Vic and Lillian Rogers attended January District Health Laboratory will no longer be able to accept water samples on Fridays to avoid problems of comthe tests on the weekends pleting Also the lab will be closed for the Christmas holidays beginning December 22 1988 through January 2 1989 We encourage all communities to get their samples in early to avoid any problems We appreciate your support and cooperation in this matter and also your efforts to provide a good quality of water to your systems Fewer Americans this year will be to hungrily awaiting Thanksgiving carve into a succulent roast turkey That’s because an increasing number of Americans have discovered that turkey isn’t just for Thanksgiving anymore Today’s health conscious consumers know that turkey’s convenience t and economy cholesterol and calorie composition make it the ideal substitute for beef pork and even chicken Americans now consume more than 15 billion pounds of turkey in all forms from turkey breast to turkey franks according to the National Turkey Federation Turkey consumption has increased 85 percent in the past 25 years Turkey processors have helped create this surge in popularity by producing that are healthy turkey products substitutes for red meats Mr Turkey for example produces turkey franks ham sausage lunchmeats and other products that taste like their red meat but have fewer calories counterparts and less fat and cholesterol The process that Mr Turkey uses to make turkey bologna turkey ham and other turkey products is similar to the process used to make beef bologna or pork ham For example the traditional process of curing and smoking gives pork ham its distinctive taste a taste not inherent in the meat itself For the same reason turkey ham tastes like ham instead of roast turkey Turkey meat readily adapts to curing smoking and pressure cooking so that it takes on the flavors of the spices in which it is cooked With turkey franks the traditional automated process is used but special spice treatments lend the turkey a ball park flavor perfect Turkey sausage and kielbasa undergo the same process with their own special spices Lean turkey products are especially beneficial to children whose diets rely heavily on fatty franks burgers and lunchmeats The US Surgeon General Public Voice for Food and Health Policy and other agencies have reported that the diets of US children are too high in fat While a serving of ground beef contains 145 grams of fat the same amount of turkey contains only 116 grams Mr Turkey is among the leaders in better encouraging nutrition for children This year Mr Turkey created the “Amazing Meal Machine” an educational toy featuring nutritional tips and recipes that help children put what they have learned into practice by making their own healthy meals snacks and desserts The Meal Machine features a rotating “wheel” with more than 20 recipes aimed at children ages 6 to 14 There recipes were approved as nutritionally beneficial by the Cooperative Extension Service of Michigan State University Processing for variety and versatility with along economy and health benefits are reasons turkey has come into its own among today’s busy and health conscious Americans Turkey is fresh convenient to cook versatile and economical Pound for pound turkey pleases the budget nurtures the heart and soothes cravings for fatty deli foods Turkey a long established tradition has returned once again as a master at pleasing palates of Americans in practical everyday meals while continuing as the elegant roast bird we remember from Grandma’s house
