$55000 Topham said “We’ve tried to get at least two buses a year” he said “and the last few years sometimes we’ve picked up three When IPP came in we even got some special grants to buy some new buses” Other districts have had difficulty keeping up despite a Utah Office of Education program which reimburses districts 10 percent of the cost of each for 10 years Tight bus annually enrollments buses there would be no question in my'2 ynind that they would want to provide'art safety for students” Millard District transportation supervisor Jack Finlinson said that’s what is being done here “Mainly we’re trying to replace those old buses as fast as we can” he said “and of the eight that we do have I think we can probably get rid of four of them this I don’t know what we’re summer looking at next year but I would assume two and maybe three We’re working on the problem” Safeguards like tougher specifications for joint construction padded seats that keep children from being catapulted during a quick stop and gas tank barriers that can help preare not included in vent explosions 1977 buses built before April “There’s no doubt those newer buses are safer than the older buses” Finlinson said “Although the older ones do have a good record” There has also been the suggestion that the placement of gas tanks even with reinforcement is not safe enough Dec 23 Drawing for DNES PTA need to have it right in the middle of the bus” Clayton said “If it is on the outside at least you have one side of the bus that students could be in in case of a fire Maybe they would have a little more time to get out of the bus” Officials agree that materials used to cover seats in buses do not meet federal fire standards and should be studied A test conducted by Fiberglass showed that it takes only 3 minutes for bus seats to become engulfed in flames During the test temperatures exceeded 1400 degrees inside the bus Finlinson said seat material in the older Millard Distnc buses have been replaced The move to diesel engine in buses also improves safety Diesel has a lower flash point Clayton said shcool buses don’t use lap seat belts because they have been found to cause internal injuries to children in collision He said shoulder harnesses pose installation problems and it is difficult to monitor their use Glenn Bryson owner of a regional Bluebird bus dealership in Bountiful said windows on most buses are large enough escape routes for children accidents Despite involving school buses in other parts of the country school transportation official say that school bus transportation is still the safest way to go “School transportation as long as you keep it in the school bus is the safest form of transportation” Clayton said “It is eight times safer than transporting a student in a passanger car” Finlinson agrees “The buses are naturally safer” he said “being higher and bigger than a car The accident ratio is significantly less on a school bus than on any other mode of transportation” School bus drivers are safer too Finlinson said “They are probably the best trained drivers in the state” he said “They have an excellent record” AIR FORCE continued need to ask the Air Force to address the right questions” Erickson said Erickson said the Air Force has prepared detailed maps and has filed land use permits in the West Desert Downwinders has filed a Freedom of Information Act request for release of the documents on Dec 8 with Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci Erickson wants to see a map he said the Air Force showed Bureau of Land Management officials in a confidential meeting “on or about October 1st’ he said “According to two people I talked with from BLM they saw a map that was far more detailed than the one passed out at scopings I want it” Permit applications for in the area is public domain but it’s in the FOIA request “just to make sure” Erickson said “The BLM told us we can go in and look at them so that should be taken care of” Before Utah was selected as the final test range 23 option for the other areas in the country were reviewed and rejected by the Air Force Erickson wants to see all documents related to that decision “This is the most important area as far as I’m concerned” he said “It’s our feeling that they violated the spirit if not the letter of the National Environmental Policy Act in that narrowing decision” The Air Force must acknowledge receipt of the request within 10 days but it may take months for the information to be released Erickson said Erickson said Downwinders is also studying the potential health hazards associated with electromagnetic radiation and lasers A draft environmental impact statement on the test range is scheduled to be released in May More hearings will then be scheduled including one in Delta The final EIS will be published in September 1989 we spent on the project in the next five years and about 300 jobs will be created by 1994 “Callao won’t get any of those jobs where live” Garland said “All we’ll aircraft over our get is the place and I’m flat out sick and tired of it” The West Desert School has 53 students kindergarten through 12th age children grade Several also live on ranches in the sparsely settled region “There’s not a lot of us” Alder said “but it’s home” The problem is greater in the summer he said when flights often occur daily The Air Force provides no warning of the supersonic flights which Alder said are often below treetop level In a series of public scoping workshops held last month including one in Delta Nov 15 Air Force officials said the range when in 2000 would produce a 30 percent increase in air traffic roar “If I never hear another over my ranch again as long as live” Garland said “it’ll be too soon" also criticized was The test range by Steve Erickson of Down winders Inc who objected during the scoping at“The workshops mosphere of those scopings was not sigmfifsntly revealing of information War Toys Utah State University College of Family Life She says regular routine physical acshould tivity should be the norm Life be planned around activities and not meals Teaching skills such as learning to play catch kicking a ball and jumping will promote physical activity and also help your children become involved with their peers Lindauer says Although we have a mental image of preschoolers being highly active in reality little time is spent in vigorous play such as running climbing or playing ball games she says When left to children generally play themselves quietly in small groups also observes that as Lindauer more preschools are becoming children are oriented academically forced to spend more' time at desks than in movement activities Children are discouraged from running around from dietitians The consensus physical educators and early childhood specialists in the past three weeks’ columns is what behind every kid with a weight problem there are a couple of adults contributing to it So if your own health isn’t motivaconsider helping the tion enough younger generation off to a better start of By Dennis Hinkamp Information Writer Utah State University Two of my favorite bumper stickers of the year are: “War is no buy war toys?” and “If you believe in peace why let your kids play at war?” Think about this when you go shopping this year What purpose do war toys serve? You can argue for freedom of choice and expression but it is hard to defend them on any other grounds Even if you believe that we as a nation need to be constantly prepared to protect our freedom these toys do not prepare youth for the realities of war any more than Barbie dolls prepare them for the realities of marriage says Dr Ann Austin mother of five and early childhood specialist in the Utah State University College of Family Life But you say war toys have always been with us Before GI Joe there were cowboy and Indian toys and before that kids probably tossed rocks and sticks at each other Well one of the differences is that new war toys have become less imaginative and more scripted It is difficult to defend them even on the basis of fostering creativity There used to be just generic good guys and bad buys now there is a defined enemy Most of the war toys are supported by cartoons and movies that tell the kids who the enemies are One of the most popular of these “action figures” tells on the label whether or not this is an enemy or a good guy On the back of the package is a short biography about this person There is something both comical and eerie about this For example one reads “this is the type of person who butts in the front Consumer lines and never leaves a tip she disguised herself as a dental assistant for six months and used poison dental floss on her victims” As if going to the dentist isn’t already frightening enough for kids they have to plant the thought of evil dental hygienists in their minds It is hard to shield your kids from war toys even if you choose not to buy them says Austin Many of your children’s friends will have them You may even have relatives who insist on giving them to your children as gifts She says maybe the best you can do is make your own house a demilitarized zone You can just explain to your children that they can play with war toys at friends or at grandma’s house but they can’t bring them home This allows them respect for others’ as well as your beliefs Dr Shelley Lindauer director of the child development lab in the USU College of Family Life says she keeps war toys out of the lab campus but the kids still know about guns When a policeman comes to class to talk to them often the first thing they want to see in his gun They talk about resolving conflicts by “blowing away” the other person Another problem with war toys is that they are becoming too Last year Burbank Calif banned toy guns that are replicas of the real thing such as machine guns This several manufacturers are year toy gun painting the muzzles of their guns orange to make them more distinguishable from the real thing War toys require that there be an enemy Austin says Maybe conflict is just a reality of life but maybe it is that way because we are always preparing ourselves for conflict — You and Your Child Success 1 in School by JIM CAMPBELL Utah Education Association President A teacher who came from another country gave this illustration: If a Japanese mother has two children— one very bright and the other not very bright she will say to the less bright child: “You can be a doctor like your brother It will take you three times as much hard work but you can do it You will do it You will work three times harder” But according to the teacher an American parent is likely to say to the less bright child: "You can’t be a doctor like your You will be an automobile brother mechanic instead” Then the teacher made it plain that it’s okay to be an auto mechanic “but what we’re telling the child is that just because it will take him longer to become a doctor c r A I&4 A he shouldn’t do it at all” Sometimes a “less bright” student will fool both the teacher and the mother That happens when motivation comlack of pensates for any brainpower We see it when the does poorly in reading at first and later reads a Russian novel in a day We see it when the college student does poorly on the law school aptitude test is admitted anyway and finishes in the top ten percent of her class We see it when we don’t expect it But we see it far more often when we do expect it Like the Japanese mother if we expect a lot from our children they often live up to that expectation The’ County Agent by Larry Campbell L'SU Extension Agent Tom was a champion at At 35 pounds that is For you see Tom is a turkey
