Show 'i 1 - s by Ken Rand The Delta High School acappella choir gave four performances on the Wasatch Front Wednesday Dec 14 in an effort to raise money for a trip to France this summer The choir performed in the University Mall ZCMI and the State Capitol rotunda during the day In the evening they sang the National Anthem at the Golden Eagles hockey game at the Salt Palace They also performed during halftime The choir will represent Utah this summer in Paris when France celebrat-te- s the bicentennial of the French Revolution "The kids did a wonderful job” Angela Wankier said “When they were at the University Mall the lady who was in charge of scheduling for the kids there said ‘I’ve come down to listen to each one of the groups and this is by far the best that I’ve heard yet’ She was really impressed” Wankier’s husband David is choir director at DHS The performance at the Capitol took place while the legislature was in session for interim committee meetings Literature was distributed about the choir’s summer plans to all the legislators Some of the students met informally with Gov Norm Bangerter Wankier said the choir approached the governor’s office about singing at the inauguration on Jan 25 At the ZCMI Center “people up on the balcony threw money at them” Wankier said “It was such a fun experience for them” They made about $24 that way “The kids did not sound quite as good in the Salt Palace” Wankier said “but it was such a shock to them to x- Lauretta Jacobsen More than just a haricut by Ken Rand Lauretta Jacobsen has been cutting folks hair for about 15 years But she it says there’s more to than just cutting folks hair Like bartenders people bring their problems stories and gossip to barbers “You have to be agreeable” Lauretta says “but you don’t repeat what the first person said to the next person” You also have to keep up with the latest fashions Lauretta is propriator of Lauretta’s Beauty Supply and Styles 286 W Main Delta right next to Tina’s Jewelry and Minerals She went to the Hollywood Beauty in Salt Lake City after College graduating from Delta High School When she graduated from the College she taught there for a while She also ran her own shop in Salt Lake City for a time before returning to Delta to raise a family The Jacobsens have eight children Lauretta cuts the children’s hair She opened for business at the location July In addition to haircuts and chatting with customers Lauretta does perms colors hair styling make up and she sells wholesale and retail beauty and grooming products By appointment or She cuts hair for men women and children Lauretta can’t say whether she prefers men to women but children are a problem “They like to squirm” she says “It’s kind of a challenge but some of them are really good” There was a time when men wouldn’t go near a beauty shop but times and haircut fashions change “I think when men started wearing longer hair and more relaxed hairstyles a lot of barbers didn’t want to handle that” Lauretta says “so men started going to beauticians to get that more feathery and relaxed look” But Lauretta has not had an opportunity to experiment with the latest urban craze of spiked purple hair “at least not on purpose” Nor is she able to do much with my bald spot “My favorite saying I saw on a once” she says “I’m a beautician not a magician” Nonetheless Lauretta says she hopes her work helps people “feel better not just look better” Keeping up with the latest style means constantly studying hairstyles and beauty and grooming products “When people come in to get something” she says “they want me to tell them what they need Sometimes they come in and say they want something different but then they add they don’t want this or they don’t want that By the time they get all their ‘don’t wants’ they end up with what they already have” Thursday seems to be her busiest day “I don’t know why” Lauretta says “I haven’t figured it out yet Fridays arc getting to be busy too” The day before school started was another very busy day “I enjoy my work” Lauretta says “I like to work with people And I’m still growing I’m just going to keep growing and growing until I can satisfy every person who comes in here And if we outgrow it then we’ll just get something bigger” Lauretta says she could do 20 to 25 haircuts a day “But you don’t want to get too busy” she says “because you want people to get personal attention and not make them feel like they’re in an assembly line think that’s more I think one reason people important especially women go to get their hair done is for relaxation the therapeutic value of it “Isn’t it relaxing having someone run their fingers through your hair?” BLM oil and gas lease auction set Nearly a third of a million acres of land located in 18
