bonnet for his costume Sure wish more people remembered their Dad ’6 being in the show only Cove Fort continued credit as those who have taken the One is Sherman Hinckley spotlight whose brother President Gordon B Hinckley accepted the Fort property in behalf of the Church Sherman refused to sit on the stand being more concerned that the details were seen to hauling away the trash himself Everyone who worked with Sherman was lavish in his praise He was spoken of as a true gentleman The other unsung hero of the day was Calvin Kesler He was always there structo help demolish the tures around the Fort to show the new owners the things they needed to know about the Fort to provide equipment and generally make everything easier Calvin a man knowm and liked throughout Millard County grew up in and around Cove Fort Throughout the emotional period of seeing Fort go to pther hands Calvin was always helpful and available good natured and smiling through it all I add the Now as a historian Volunteers help with Fort Deseret restoration has been what said in refollowing to cent days: Brigham Young sent Ira N ed and scheduled Plan to have a family Again we ask for help with donated Cove Creek to build a fort Hinckley jo labor and Donated cedar home evening service activity at Tort money posts y' He succeeded brilliantly in his task: that Deseret if possible Call Cleo Eliason £ re needed at this time also Call Norof overseeing the fort’s construction man Henke at if you can help if you can come as a famiat But it is not true as stated by the with labor Donations can be made at ly at a time convenient for you papers the television reporters and on the First Security Bank Delta Utah to Working together has made the Fort the historical plaques that Cove Fort the Fort Deseret Restoration Fund Deseret Restoration Project continue was built by Ira Hinckley: Ira N Hin- - Old town hall on Historic Register After the golden age of the movies died down the place was empty for a few years There were plans to tear it down but some local citizens made an effort to see the building bought by the Utah Daughters of Pioneers The Daughters could not afford to buy the building but efforts to preserve it continued With the help of a grant the building was renovated in 1986 for use as a Senior Citizens Center its current function As many as 30 seniors are served there of the Pioneers The Daughters Museum is located in the basement of the building The building also sees occasional use for town meetings It was used as a voting place at one time but that function is now held at the new town hall across the street at the fire station The old Scipio town hall has been named to the National Registry of Historic Places There had been plans to tear the building down but those were sidetracked by local interest in preserving and using it It was once a movie theater It is now a Senior Citizens Center It was built in 1935 to house the Scipio Town Theater Just inside the front door of the building is the old ticket booth Two tickets from the old theater are taped to the glass of the booth One is an adult ticket for 30 cents including five cents tax the other is a child’s ticket That one is for 14 cents including two cents tax Local actors also performed shows on the tiny stage which has since been removed and when they had outlived their were allowed to original purpose crumble They were lost The Kesler family rebuilt the north wing of Cove Fort and restored it as best they could They maintained the Fort with an eye to history and to future tesearch for over 80 years They did not remodel they did not bulldoze they did not burn they did not destroy they I preserved for future generations repeat: that the Fort exists today in a state that it can be used by the Church for a visitor center is due entirely to the descendants of William Kesler His son Otto taught his children the value of the Fort not only as their “home” but as a priceless part of history to be preserved and cared for for those yet to come Otto Kesler’s children Mary have Joseph and Calvin especially regarded the Fort as a sacred trust That trust they have now passed on through the help and generosity of the Hinckley family to the Church whielp now recognizes the value of Cove Fort and which now has the interest and the resources to revitalize the historic struck ture and maintain it for future generations to enjoy ckley did not build Cove Fort He was the manager the superintendent of construction the supervisor but Ira Hinckley did not build the fort at Cove Creek Ranch The Fort was built (as their people of Millard County well know) by the Warners the Pauls the Smiths the Willdens the Blacks the Arza E Hinckley HC Kings Hansen John Trimble and many others It should also be noted here that the skills Ira N Hinckley learned which caused him to be called to build the Fort he learned at Nauvoo from Frederick Kesler! It is also not true as seemed to be indicated in new s releases that the Hinckley family had “reacquired” the Fort The Hinckleys never owned it They were tenants manging the Fort for the Church After some years the Hinckleys left the Fort was abandoned and fell into serious disrepair The Fort its north wing gutted by fire was acquired by the Kesler family in 1902 William H Kesler grandson of Frederick Kesler first rented and then purchased Cove Fort from Joseph F Smith trustee in trust for the Church It is (and cannot stress this too strongly) due to the Kesler family and them alone that Cove Fort stands today The other forts remained in the hands of the Church Respectfully yours Frederick M Huchel mm “ qr ' W Attend and Support Your Church 1) (Cy FLOW'ELL WARD YW Prim CITY 2nd WARD OAK OASIS WARD 11:30 1220 Sac Meeting Howard Bishop 120 Dutson Res am pm pm 846 2261 DELTA 3rd WARD Sac Meeting Bishop Rex Day Res DELTA 4th WARD Sac Meeting Bishop Jack Eowles 900 am 1020 am am 864 2208 1230 1:50 pm pm 240 pm Res 864 3135 Bart 6th DELTA LEARNING OF THE child digging in the wet sand of an ocean beach but it s more than playing She is touching is playing and feeling seeing and wondering she is learning The Apostle Paul told us to seek into all things and A Simmons Res WARD Abbott Shared Ministry 10’ So 200 W Pastor Warren Sunday Sunday in Utah 864 2255 or fikeS CHURCH 1000 Worship School Res am JOHN BOSCO CATHOLIC MISSION 96 South Center Father Walter A Remdeau Pastor 10:00 am Sunday Mass 30 pm Daily Mass Saturday Vigil Mass THE LIVING WORD 1081 Pastor Mam 5 30 FELLOWSHIP Delta Jim Gregg ARD 1230 1:50 2 Res Clayton LENNOX Agency Don’s Heating Sen ice 297 N Hwy 6 - Service Delta pm pm 40 pm am pm pm Sac WARD 900 am 1020 a m tl:05 am Meeting YW Dale Bliss 233 S 200 W 5 ARD Prim Meeting Bishop Don Probert 10:00 11:00 11:50 7S8 2404 KANOSH PM Res ARD Prim 1000 am IhOO am Warmck 1:00 pm 220 pm Jr 3:05 pm Res 864 3105 50 a m Hansen Meeting Lester Bishop 50 Dobson Res Res am am am 795 2203 FILLMORE CHURCHES CHURCH OE CHRIST West 500 South Worship Service Bible Study WARD Blv Meeting Bishop John 10:00 1100 900 am 00 a m DELTA UTAH WEST STAKE ARD Sac FILLMORE STAKE LDS WARDS FILLMORE HOLDEN am am am 50 am Res 759 2481 Meeting Bp Vernon J Christensen Res YW am am am 842 864 3494 Information :00 am 1000 am call 743 S864 or 864 2S3I HOLY FAMILY CAfHOLIC MISSION 390 Mam St Fillmore Sunday Mass pm Father Walter Remdeau SSS Pastor Delta Rectory Phone 864 37I0 Fillmore for info phone GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH STAKE LEAMINGTON Sac Meeting Ana Motel Sun School WARD ss Bishop SCIPIO Ladd OAK CITY Holman Res 1000 a m 1120 12:10 am pm Morning Evening Pastor 857 2508 WARD Prim J Nielson Res Fillmore 1000 am 11:00 am 600 pm 7:00 pm Ed Williams Rowley Trailer Park Space Sun Bible Study Reg '"Kenneth 8462871 Delta Community Medical Center SERVICE DRUG Prescription Druggist Cosmetics Jewelry Cameras Am Greeting Cards Sundries 215 West Main Main Worship Worship FILLMORE BAPTIST CHURCH Southern Baptist Affiliation 9:00 am 10 00 am 0 50 am ss Sac Meeting Bishop Aiden 50 No tted Pastor Da’s Insurance Complete Insurance pm H:S0 Res Carling 864 JESUS CHRIST OF SAINTS DELTA a m IhOO DeLyle Sac 2nd Howard Bp P Waldo CHURCH OF CHRIST Information call 864 2531 or PRESBYTERIAN Res Meeting Bishop am am am WARD 10:00 Sac Sac DELTA COMMUNED CHURCH MEADOW Res HINCKLEY 2nd WARD Sac Meeting WORLD Text by David Manley 11:50 pm 900 am 10:00 am 50 am SUTHERLAND Sac Meeting Bishop am noon WARD Meeting Bishop hold fast to that which is true The world around us is full of useful and marvelous truths The works of God surround us and our faith can only increase as we investigate the many wonders of His world Photo SUTHERLAND PH RS HINCKLEY 11:00 1220 Meeting Bishop 50 Meeting Bishop Dale Willoughby Bishop 11:00 Meeting Bishop Ray Nielsen Sac DELTA 5th WARD Sac 11:00 12:00 Sac Sac 10:00 Sac 126 White Sage S Ave Fillmore Community Medical Center 674 S 10 Kuhlman 5:00 pm 630 pm 896 8026 Delta Liquor Store West Main Delta 271 Hwy 99 Delta 8 BENNETTS Eat In DRIVE - DELTA Your Eat Out types of burgers chicken 303 E Main Delta All IN fish AUTO & Colleciskles APPLIANCE Electronics And Family Video 341 West Main Della Bikes Store Wood for Decorative Painting 278 West Main Delta Ph T ALLRED’S EQUIP CO Holland & Hesston Equipment New W Hwy E&50 Delta Courtesy Ace Hardware Briar Patch Your hardware houseware clothing toys headquarters 266 W Main Delta Home merchandise weekly Shop at New 29 N 300 W Della 864 2233 |
