Show P8 2 - Millard County USPS Thurs Sept 15 ffiomments Holden says NO 1988 i don’t feel like writing anything this week I have been fighting the black cloud again ever since the autumn chill started in the air I have wondered how the approach of fall would affect me this year And now I can’t decide whether I have worried myself into thinking the approach of winter would bring on the usual black cloud or if the approach of winter does actually bring on the black cloud Whichever it is the black cloud is sneaking up on me but as the weather is supposed to heat back up and get sunny again toward the weekend maybe I’ll get a reprieve for awhile We talked today at the office about what kind of a voter turnout there would be today for the Primary Election and at 8:30 pm Shellie asked if I remembered to vote No I drove past the Hinckley City Building twice tooay and wondered why all the cars were there and nothing ever registered This to me is one of the symptoms of the black cloud when things don’t fit together Some days it can be very useful to have an excuse for being absentmind-ebut most of the time it is just damned maddening I wonder how long an area has to deal with this if it is a common malady situation? I know we in a are all individuals but there must be an average and it has been about a year since we had the last of the major 1PP outmigration this about 5 times Well I’ve and I hope it makes more sense to the reader than the writer 1988 the members of the On Sept Town Council voted Holden unanimously to oppose the transporwaste ting of toxic or hazardous through Holden and also the building of a hazardous waste dump site in Millard County Holden Town Council TO THE J$ne EDITOR Utah a dump? What I would like to know is: are governor and state senator our our lawyers attorneys commissioners and some of the mayors trying to sell Utah “Down the river of no return?” Is Utah to be the dumping grounds for all the states around us? With thousands of truckloads of hazardous waste to be allowed to come into our state—what next? Incinerators—for what? To put its and pollution into our air our water soil? I would like to see laws made now our Ya don’t say! Cove Fort While in Millard County in connection with the transfer of property at read the piece in historic Cove Fort your paper concerning the Fort and the (then) upcoming festivities for Aug 11 I should like to add some comments and an addendum to your brief article There are often things which go on which do not appear at first glance and which are often missed in the press of events Having had some experience with the newspaper reporting business I have noted that in the rush to meet a deadline and move to the next story there is always the risk of being superficial in coverage of an important event I should like to add some perspective to the reporting not only of your paper but of the media coverage in general of the history and events at Cove Fort on Saturday Aug 13 m Delta Area ' li t Fillmore Area Bs i la RdniTv Low Precp 55 54 52 55 57 60 57 Community Calendar Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore & Delta Millard County weekdays Assessor’s offices Sept 8 - 29 The Annual Open Art Show Multipurpose Room Fillmore Library Open during library hours: weekdays pm or by appointpm Sat ment with librarian Sept 12 30 Local Artists Open Exhibit paintings and drawings photography Fillmore Library Sept 12 - 18 West Millard Pool Closed Sept IS Delta High School Back to School night 7 pm Sept 16 Darcy Webster Burt and Heather De Leeuw wedding open house pm Pahvant Senior Citizen Center Sept 17 East Millard Fine Arts Guild Openpm Ilene Cooper’s ing Social garden Sept 17 & 18 Delta West Stake Conference Chronicle Progress USPS Published mnr M624 Publish! You certainly don’t! Perhaps you could review information you can from the US obtain Geological Survey or the Sevier River Water before more of your Commissioner foot slides down your throat! If that’s too difficult a task let me that I DID give you information research and had orally VERIFIED (on the evening of September 1) by Walter F Holmes He is a man who has done extensive research in our area who has spent a great deal of time dealing with our underground culinary water and a man who certainly knows what he’s talking about He researched and comr piled the paperbook Hydrology and Projected Effects of in the r Withdrawals for the US Utah Sevier Desert Geological Survey Verified Facts: “The site of the proposed facility IS on the major Recharge area for this valley It is UPSTREAM from our culinary water supply and the ground water in this valley MOVES from that direction RECHARGE to r reservoir is by the filtration of percipitation seepage from streams canals reservoirs and unconANY consumed irrigation water tamination in the recharge area in the Sevier River OR on the CROPS will eventually contaminate the aquifers (or water) in the entire valley” As far as your statement that we are being selfish and do not want to help clean up our nation then say to you: “If we in Utah have to dispose of every other states hazardous waste Continued on p3 Priorities wrong The frenetic energy being expended of the on stopping the construction Rollins Hazardous Waste Facility at Lynndyl could be better spent on more immediate problems in my opinion The problems I’m referring to is the availability of alcohol and other drugs to youth Again it’s my opinion but toxic Add those too are hazardous to that the number of known incest cases and the advent of devil worship and it is a sad commentary on todays life in West Millard County At best the proposed Rollins Plant is two years down the road The above problems are happening now NOW When I have expressed these conI cerns to friends and acquaintances no comreceive agreement by mittment to take the ball and try to stop the sales of alcoholdrugs to youth I hear questions usually in whispers on incest that invariable include a plaintive “But what can I do?” I have no answers but I do have some suggestions We can all stop fearing our own sexuality We can volunteer to help incest We can confront the victims We can ask ourselves perpetrators “Are our sons and daughters getting factual information on sexual matters from school and church authority figures?” Could discussions on such a delicate subject include discussions by incest perpetrators who cannot possibly be happy with their own actions? Could older incest victims help young incest victims understand the overriding shame hatred of their own sexuality guilt feelings? Isn’t it worth a try? Incest is not always reported for and second to foremost is that is the blot on the family name Doesn't everyone want the family name to be respected and yes envied? Fear of disbelief is another reason that it Female incest victims isn’t reported tend to blame their very femaleness More attention is sometimes given to the “poor misguided” perpetrator of incest with the innocent young victim being doubted and perhaps told to “forget about it Everything will be all becomes the way of right” the victim with “hate” being the predominant emotion It was suggested to me following the meeting at DHS that “we need Sept to get this Rollins matter resolved before we tackle another cause” But in two years how many more lives are to be crippled through perverted sex devil worship alcoholdrugs? Following that same meeting learndid not seek ed of another incest case It came to me volunthat information tarily with the question “What would you do?” It was not until the next day that I learned that devil worship is gaining a toehold in Millard Had known of this latest incest case and about devil worship in the area BEFORE the meeting they would have been aired at the meeting and I would not have been shouted down Booed? Maybe But not shouted down Approximately three years ago good brought an idea to friends Briefmy husband to help area youth a group ly stated the idea was to form of adults whose goals were to help area recreation youth develop alternative plans to the drinking and at parties that seemed to be prevalent the time and his wife Sheriff Phillips and us four of Verlene met with the had they were most encouraging They many suggestions The sheriff cautioned us that we would win some and lose some He warned against disappointment also The six of us agreed that this group to become known as the Community Support Group should be divorced if you will from both school and church Our thinking was to work with and solicit support from both stitutions But we would be functionIn our lay opinions ing separately youth may turn to new faces who were sincerely expressing concern for their welfare Interestingly enough officials of both institutions agreed with our They realized that some thinking the through youth were “slipping cracks” We did receive support for both our efforts from the officials school and churches We enlisted the aid of two Ella Sannes and Pat firebrands Bringard as both were already active Both the Sannes and with youth had been known to families Bringard open doors to troubled youth cluding runaways At first we had good community support At our first "official” meeting Nord Brockbank of Fillmore came over First donations for operating penses came from Nord Frank Baker Jr Each donated Ralph Morrison $500 Theretofore all expenses had from those of us been the to group airlifted When get trying $15 is all you have to work with every We worked on that penny counts amount for almost a year plus our own expenses sending out meeting notices to every church in west Millard County The churches would make sure their congregations received the info Without compromising our intended goals we launched the program We did not go in for too much interaction with youth Rather we never forget that we were the adults and acted accordingly We did not veer Jim FletKNAK OwnerManager cher invited us to promote a program on Voice of the Valley We did that Special guests included Juvenile Judge Jackson Circuit Judge Ronnow Supt Topham and other school officials Sheriff Phillips Delta and DHS Police Chief Cooper students Mr Fletcher was most supportive and was overheard to say many times that those programs brought more listener response than any other The churches were duly notified of the programs each month and the guests were named We tried to cover all our bases Oi equal importance the Chronicle Progress was generous in its publicity Sue never stinted We sought jobs from juvenile court Foremost in our minds was that youth in trouble with the law had feelings that needed to be carefully handled We did nothing to embarass the youthful offender We were NOT soft If one under our supervision was out of line in hisher approach to this sentence a was given We royal found jobs that took the youth from cleaning Main Street gutters More was at stake we thought than gutters! Jack Nelson and Grant Nielson created jobs at their ranches in Lynndyl and Leamington for youth who were desperate for a paying job David Noah Alternative Learning Center notified us when one of his students needed employment Jobs were found hourly basis for many of them Some worked off their hours by helping with the program of which my husband and me were in charge for several years Lenore Bunker joined our ranks helping to notify parents whose student(s) was absent from Delta High Many “sluffers” were found this way School dropouts were encouraged to stay in school and get that There we were diploma successful somewhat All the time this was going on our community through support became more slim We had so many projects going that we all were becoming exhausted We did have help and Pam I don’t mean to infer differently Nielson Six County DrugAlcohol Abuse Director was invaluable with But exhausher youthful enthusiasm tion becomes burnout if you’ll excuse that overworked cliche So we folded our tents and went out with a mild bang-day of activities on the Delta City Park sparked by Ella and her sons Mel and Joel We had raised enough money through private contributions to emblazoned purchase colorful with a hot air balloon on the front with the joyful “Get High on Life” Beneath the balloon was the slogan “Drug Free Youth” Every child or youth on the park was presented one of the shirts as well as a ribbon designed by Sandy Tuttle Generous merchants joined in with handsome prizes for the top winners So as I listened at the Sept meeting all this came crashing down I became terribly upset Then incensed We had pleaded cajoled tried a bit of coercion perhaps and argued in favor of youth only to be repeatedly told “I don’t have time to help” or worse yet “You’re doing great I’m right behind you” And we found that were behind us that was Way way behind us! We wanted and needed help so badly that I’m assuming many opposing Rollins are doing so on behalf of unborn generations I know that was my sweet pure water first for our heirs And then brought myself up short Very short There are children and youth today TODAY who need help I’m not willing to say that one we help today may not be tomorrow’s genius who will perfect the system of hazardous waste disposal to the point that a guarantee can be given And not I’m talking industrial solvents from the used oils manufacture of agricultural pesticides etc We found that our Sheriff Phillips was very prophetic We did win some We know by the number of telephone calls we received and continue to receive with such messages as “I got a B in History” of “I got all A’s and B’s last term” or “I’ve changed Thought you’d like to know” Such calls make the thrills run deep And sad to say we did lose some If we had been able to get a tenth of the meeting to suppeople of the Sept port our efforts as enthusiastically as they are opposing the Rollins Co a lot of good for community youth could have been wrought I daresay that some of the area youth who are in in trouble NOW could have been turned around with just a bit more sincere concern from the adult population I hope this letter touches other adults I’d like to think that my mentality is not questioned in as a contemptuous manner as I heard the mentality of the Lynndyl Town Board’s questioned at a recent public meeting at Delta City Council I would like to think that I’ll not receive an ugly anonymous telephone call as a friend received threatening job loss if she didn’t support the opposition to Rollins I’m too old to be anything but impervious to scare tactics I’m sure of my facts on the growth of devil worship I’m sure of the number of incest cases What info that has come to me on devil worship has been turned over to the proper authorities as info on incest cases These same authorities tell me that drug abuse by area youth is down from what it was three years ago exof cepting alcohol Consumption alcohol is way up So maintain that todays youth are just as important to protect as future And protections can be generations had with widespread community support in my opinion Sarah Inez Moody The County Agent by Larry Campbell USU Extension Agent Estate planning made easy part Last week we talked about things you can do to manage your estate while you’re still living This week we’ll talk about three tools used to protect your estate after your death The first is a will A will does several things It authorizes someone to act as your personal representative of your estate usually the surviving spouse It names a guardian for minor or disabled children It provides for tax planning and finally it distributes property Property can be left as an outright bequest to someone or a trust can be established with the proceeds to go to Wills specific persons you name should also include a “self providing will” form which is a certificate signed by two witnesses and notorized attesting you are conmpetant and that this is what you want done with your estate The second tool is perhaps the one most often used that being joint tenancy deeds For example your house car or bank account can all be automaticalto the surviving joint tely transferred nant upon your death It works well for small estates but even then there are some problems you need to be aware of One is if you both die you are back to probate again Second never list a minor with you as a joint tenant for four reasons One if you do your property is tied up with the minor and you or he can’t change it until he comes of age Second when you put his or her 2 name on a joint title half the property is legally theirs and they could apply to have the interest severed and the property sold to get their portion Third the minor could incur a debt such as a car loan or judgement suit which can become a lien against your property Fourth you may be creating a gift tax liability that will have to be paid now if their portions value exceeds $10000 The third tool is to deed property now to those you want to get it but reserve a “life estate” now Once again there are some problems As long as you are living even if you are incapacitated the heirs cannot use it or even maintain it Thus the many vacant homes in disrepair you see around town You are far better off to decide what you want done with your property and then to ask an attorney which tool or method would best accomplish your desires and avoid any problems But what’s all this good stuff going to cost? A simple will costs from $100 to $200 for both husband and wife A single individual’s will ranges from $100 to $150 A will with trust provisions costs from $200 to $300 for both husband and wife or $200 to $250 for an individual You can save 25 percent of these costs by doing your own homework before you go to talk to your attorney and that’s what we’ll talk about next week |
