I started celebrating Saint Valentines Day, as if that heart at anyone s i heart-theme- got someones 'iive remember the days when I would despise my friends who went on dates on Valentines Day. For some reason I had it imprinted on my brain like a newspaper comic on a glob of Silly Putty that my friends should have noticed how single I was and therefore gone out of their way to spend some extra time with me. How selfish of them, I would think. Luckily, before I found my soul mate, I figured out a way to make this aw this out ud I in particu- - in the person and not the 24 hours we profess our undying love to some other creature. Feb. 14 was the day Saint Valentine was beaten with clubs and then beheaded for refusing to refute his belief in the Christian faith. This is according to a report on saints and angels on Catholic.org, so I have faith thats at least the gist of what happened. Of course it makes perfect sense that the torture and beheading of a man should forever be celebrated by cutting out paper hearts and sending them to the person we want to make out with. But decided to a different way. I decided that with every valentine I handed out to friends and family, I would include a little fact about a famous person who was beheaded. It just made more sense to me to acknowledge Valentines Day as more 1 cel-ebra- te of awareness day. Finally, I could use all those pictures I kept drawing of Marie Antoinette. Needless to say, I never followed through on my idea because Im essentially a pretty lazy person. But I certainly hope you see my point: If you cant stand this idea. holiday, then why not turn it into a holiday you can stand? Id like to hear everyones alternative celebratory styles for Valentines Day. Instead of griping about not being hitched, why not sing a song about getting clubbed? Instead of handing out valentines, how about handing out photos of guillotines? Rather than a romantic dinner for two, why not go to a local restaurant and threaten to behead everyone unless they renounce Christianity? Actually, that last one sounds like a pretty bad Im rating every person who comes up with a new way to celebrate Valentines Day with one out of one perfect person to spend the rest of his or her life with. OK, I cant really promise that, but the world and I would love to hear them anyway. Tweet me The SkewedReview, and like this column on Facebook at Facebook. Having a gun at the stuready would not make dents immune to attacks, but those who were confi- dent in their training and ability could easily protect themselves and others. In approximately 26 states, laws prohibit guns on public college cam- puses, even for people who obtained concealed the weapons licenses, with exception of university public safety officers. Only one state, Utah, instituprohibits its stale tions from barring guns on at campus. The massacre UniVirginia Technical in versity that took place one was Blacksburg, Va., of the deadliest shooting incidents by a single gunman in U.S. history. No one who was associated with the campus shooting at Virginia Tech was able to legally carry a form of self defense. The circumstances could have been different if the students at Virginia Tech had the right to protect themselves. Allowing students who are confident in their ability to accurately control a weapon to be in their possession at all times keeps more peace on school grounds. University of Utah President Michael Young, who unsuccessfully fought to prohibit guns at the U., said in the April 16, 2007, Salt Lake Tribune article titled Virginia Tech shootings renew campus gun debate in Utah, By see GUNS page 12 . png feelings Yor one of my profes- sors. Sometimes I get distracted in class because I think he is so cute, but I am embarrassed. I try to avoid thinking about it, but sometimes it feels like this crush is taking over my brain. I can t even concentrate in class. What should I do? Crushing in Class Dear Crushing in Class, This sounds like a case of a serious crush! I think everyone has had a time in life like this at one point where you just cant think straight whenever you are around the person in question, and all you can think about is what he or she said to you last. This kind of thing does present a problem in an academic setting, however. Since you are paying lot of money to attend school, I imagine it could be a frustrating situation. And since you want to do well in the classes you are taking, you need to spend your energy focusing on the subject matter. But with your little, ahem, distraction, this could prove to be an interesting semester. My best advice to give you is to find a way to get over it. I hate to be so frank, but really this is your only option. There is a very slim chance that this relationship is going anywhere. It is against Dixie State College code of conduct for a teacher to date a student, and there is that chance the object of your affection is already taken or married. College is a time to create the reputation you want to have for the rest of your life. The reputation you create will begin to follow you throughout not only your academic career but also your professional life. Being a isnt something you want to be remembered for.
