approved without consulting the new USU president who is expected to be named within a day or two of the athletic council meeting Athletic Director Rod Tueller declined to discuss specific figures as the projections have not been made public But Tueller he did explain that the deficit is internal to the university and does not involve any outside lender "It's a kind of a debt to ourselves and the university will address it" Almost half of USU's 1991-9$36 million athletic football budget is spent on its NCAA Division team USU expects lose several hundred thousand dollars in revenues because the team is not scheduled to play Oklhoma Nebraska or Missouri whose capacity crowds mean large profits for visiting USU Five years ago a campuswide debate erupted over football A resolution was made in the faculty senate to terminate intercollegiate football It was defeated 27 to 18 The viability of football may be raised again by the new USU president in light of the current enrollment booms and cash shortage The student body at USU has grown by 2400 students in two years but the Legislature has provided only 28 percent of the money needed to pay for them In the past the university has cut programs to save money But it cannot sacrifice any of the 14 remaining team sports and still meet NCAA Division requirements Faculty senate vice chairman Kent Robson believes the majority of USU faculty stand by the sport Robson estimates that only a third of the board would endorse nixing football "Even if the deficit is $1 million we could be to get the votes to abandon the program" said Rodson But sociology professor Richard Krannich a faculty senate member is fed up with empty promises that athletics will balance its books Academic departments across the campus have pared budgets and crammed classrooms while football continues to drain cash he said Krannich recommends that athletics consider increasing fund raising trimming support staff and improving equipment care But he added: "Nobody is going to cut corners unless you make them" USU is by no means an anomaly The University of Utah's $8 million athletic budget cannot support its 16 teams said athletic director Chris Hill U athletics expect to lose $200000 to $300000 which will come from athletic reserve funds The department has not asked the administration for funds "But those days will come soon" Hill warns "We are definitely not running in the black And we are definitely not alone" Brigham Young University has managed to keep in the black for over a decade by attracting football crowds of 65000 said Val Hale BYU assistant athletic director "There are very few Division I universities that are able to stay fiscally sound" Hale said "It is a pretty widespread problem" Adds Cazier: "There is not one school I know of that is making money" 80 9 7 3 80 9 4 5 60 4 5 7 37 0 0 0 6189 4187 0182 7 i 5 8 1 1 8 4 9 5 41 1 8 9 6 1 ii 3 3 8 6 4 4 3 Hornisch Hon Freeman Ali Bankhead Cin &steal M Tonto PR Said Karl Malone "I haven't been this excited about the playoffs since the Lakers series in 1988 and I was young then I didn't know what the playoffs were all about" not like the other night" Defense will again be a key for the Jazz who limited the Clippers to 65 points through three quarters "In stretches" said Sloan "we played well defensively Obviously in the playoffs that's the most important thing You've got to stop people and for the most part we got a pretty concerted effort" Said Jeff Malone: "We played well defensively We deflected a lot of balls Sure we had a lapse But that can
