Unfortunately, says Dr. Cannon, it s not yet possible to produce antibodies that will recognize and destroy only the abnormal white blood cells. The problem is that immunity is not a bad thing, Dr. Cannon says. It s important that you don't wipe out the whole system." While research on new therapies Tribune Medical W riter human hurmone-hksubstance, initially considered a potential treatment lor canter, may be effective against rheumatoid arthritis. University of Utah researchers hope to participate next year in a study of gamma interferon to determine whether the substance does indeed alleviate symptoms of joint disease ''The theory is. in lab experiments gamma interferon has been suggested to increase immune activity," says Dr Grant Cannon, a rheumatologist at the U. of U. Health Sciences Center 'When interferon was given to patients with cancer and arthritis, they reported an improvement in arthritis symptoms. According to Dr. Cannon, "that finding was surprising. Although the cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, victims of the disease have immune system abnormalities. But it's uncertain whether the arthritis is a cause or result of the immune system malfunction. V'We don't know whether it's a chicken or an egg, basically, says Dr. A e mt Drugs that suppress the immune response are used to treat the pain, stiffness and swelling that characterize the disease. The finding that interferon, which appears to stimulate the immune system, made arthritis Victims feel better "didnt make sense, Dr. Cannon says. . He hopes the U. of U. will be one of a small number of medical centers to further test the effectiveness of interferon on arthritis patients. Until recently, it wasn't possible to produce chough of the substance to study it on a large scale. But Biogen, a company that uses genetic engineering techniques to produce the substance, plans to launch a national study of interferon this January., Dr. Cannon said the proposed study will involve comparing patients who receive standard therapy for arthritis with those who receive interferon in addition to their regular therapy. If the research is approved by the U. of U'.'s Institutional Review Board, Dr. Cannon will be the universitys principal investigator on the study. Results of the only clinical study done to date on interferon were discussed recently at a national symposium on therapy of rheumatic diseases. Cyclosporine, an immune system repressor that has dramatically improved the survival rate oj organ transplant patients, seems tO work" on rheumatoid arthritis. (But its toxicity, says Dr. Cannon, is a problem. Since cyclosporine has been used on transplant recipients for ' side only several years, its long-terejects are unknown. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic, where arthritics are being experimentally treated with cyclosporine, cautioned during the rheumatology symposium that the substance can be considered only for patients with vtry active rheumatoid arthritis who hdve not responded to traditional treatments.
