Show 20 A The Salt Lake Tribune, TbursiUv, December damaged pages' 26, 1U83 Save the expense by learning to make own prewash DEAR HELOISE: Would you please reprint the directions for your homemade prewash spray solution? I once made some and loved it but have since lost the recipe. Thann you very much. Cheryl Just mix together equal parts of water, household liquid ammonia and liquid dishwashing detergent. (I use cup of each.) Not only is this formula good for most stains just try it on shirt collars before tossing them into the wash. A word of caution. Always wash - one-thir- d the garment immediately after spraying just in case the ammonia might affect the fabric adversely if Heloise allowed to set. Hugs, DEAR HELOISE: To hard-cooeggs in the microwave, break the egg into a greased custard cup, poke the yellow with an ice pick to prevent its k "exploding" which isn't nearly as serious as it sounds. Cover with plastic- - wrap and microwave on medium fur f to two minutes in a one and microwave, The eggs will have better color and a better taste than when boiled. -Bob Kimpton DEAR HELOISE: I enjoy my hint I (so much would like to share it with .others. I have an upright freezer and when it had several layers of things ton the shelf, it was always a concern that a falling object would break the plastic at the bottom of the door one-hal- 700-wa- , time cornes. I take out the baskets and insulate ttiem well. The job is finished in no time. Somehow, I keep better track of the things in the freezer. have more 1 loise Heloise firame. bought a couple of mesh-type- , oblong plastic clothes baskets and put one or two as space permitted on each shelf. Now, when I am searching for something I can just pull out a basket a little way or remove it completely, close the door and no more jliggling packages. When I am finished. 1 just slide it back in. This is also handy when defrosting So, I i time to see the contents without the M M. door being open so long How clever of you! Nothing is worse than digging through frozen foods' Heloise DEAR HELOISE: Recently your column had a hint suggesting burning a candle to dispel odors. Even though I scald my son's formula pitcher every time I empty it, there is still an icky film on it after a couple of uses, which soapy water does not completely remove The other day. after 1 freshened a hermos bottle with baking soda, 1 filled the pitcher full of hot water then added a couple of tablespoons of baking soda. Let it set for a few minutes. rinsed it out and had a sparkling Donna Fletcher clean pitcher! DEAR HELOISE: Here's a hint some people may have discovered, but for those who have not. When traveling, carry a roll of quarters. I was surprised at how convenient a roll is. Quarters are used for road tolls, telephones and vending machines. Also a busy person might carry extra quarters in the car for parking meters and such. James Cummins DEAR HELOISE: My daughter would irritate me when she would chew on the nasty handles on the shopping carts. (The germs on those carts!!!) I took a towel (hand towel size or large dish towel size) and folded it in 1 usually leave the furniture in the sun to dry and then spray the wicker with a furniture polish and rub it with a nice soft cloth. If wicker baskets are getting a little on the brittle si Ir and starting to break, rub a little mineral oil into the wicker. I wouldn't advise using it on your chairs because it may rub off on I sewed self tabs fabric in three tape gripping places. I also sewed two ribbons on it and hung teething toys from the ribbons. Now when I shop, I wrap this towel around the handle and fasten the tabs to hold it in place. It keeps the baby's mouth off of the handle of the cart and keeps her occupied w hile I shop. DR. This sounds like a very good idea, for daughter and mom! Heloise DEAR HELOISE: If you have wicker furniture you proably know how the dust seems to collect in all the little holes. I clean my wicker pieces every spring by brushing out the dust from all the cracks with an old toothbrush. You can use your vacuum with the brush attachment also The next step is to mix a tablespoon of salt to about two pints of cool water and scrub the wicker with a soft scrub brush. half (for the thickness). W E.T clothing. DEAR HELOISE: Sewing is my hobby. I recently made a fake fur - coat and the pattern instructions W'n ommended using heavy pins instead of basting to hold the pieces together I had a box of corsage pins and they worked beautifully to hold the fur in place. Later I utilized these same pins in making a latch hook rug If you can find a florist nice enough to sell you a box of pins, as I did. I think you will find many uses foj Katherine Wilkinson them.
