It was rumored that owls returning from a nightly hunting trip might be seen at one of these locations. And, as participants in one of 1,500 similiar bird counts held each Christmas season from Hawaii to Labrador and from Alaska to Venezuela, the Salt Lakers didn't want to miss a possible species. That was the reason other Utahns would spend a cold morning canoeing the icy waters of the Jordan Hiver, searching for birds at the Salt Lake City dump, sneaking up on the pond at the Nibley Park golf course, visiting a local duck club or snowshoeing through the mountains. That's the way it has been every Christmas season in Salt Lake since 1932, when three Salt Lake bird watchers counted 42 species. It has continued every year, using the same exact area, an area 7.5 miles around the Salt Lake Temple. This is the social event of the season for birders," said Clyde Morris, who spent a morning in the foggy confines of Parleys Gulch searching for various species. "'It's a challenge. There seems to be a lot fewer birds." The tradition of a Christmas bird watch began on Christmas Day in 1900 with bird watchers in 25 areas, mostly around major northeastern cities. This year, every Canadian province, every American state, many Central American countries and numerous West Indies islands will submit their results to the Na-- ; tional Audubon Society, which super- vises the affair and publishes all the counts in its journal American Birds. The event involves hundreds of bird watchers in some areas and as few six participants who identified four species at Tok, Alaska, in minus-2degree weather. According to Ella Sorensen, who organized Utah's Christmas Bird Count this year, there were about 50 field observers and approximately 30 backyard bird watchers participating in Utah's tabulation this year. While all the results have yet to be tabulated, early indications are that the Salt Lake group counted about 87 different species, which is close to the average. "We saw a mew gull at the dump, and that's the first time that species has shown up on a Christmas bird count," said Sorensen, who has a book on birds in Utah and is considered one of the real experts in the state at identifying birds. "Another species that we haven't got for many years was a pygmy owl, and we got two of them. That was an excellent find." She observed a peregrine falcon taking a starling at the Salt Lake City 5 dump. The peregrine was counted but the starling subtracted from a list of several thousands of that common species. Sorensen was also pleased with the fact that she observed a short-earre- worked their way through the snow and fog at the gulch, trying to decide how many magpies were flying above them. their absence were gold finches and pine siskins. These birds are often seen during the winter months in the Salt Lake area. The featured bird this year was a winter wren, which is seen some years in Salt Lake, but not often. In fact, the bird had been seen only four of the past 10 years. Morris group in Parleys Gulch sighted two of them. Most good birders use their ears first and then their eyes, said Morris, offering a bit of advice to a rank amateur as a group of five birders owl. d "In the past, you would usually see one of these short-earre- d owls," said Sorensen. "Then, they totally disappeared about three years ago. I haven't seen one until the Christmas bird count and I'm excited about that." Column See ,t ' One of the lucky birders who did see a bald eagle was Knute Rife, w ho took a canoe trip from North Temple to Center Street in North Salt Lake as his contribution to the count. "It was pretty easy going on jhe river," said Rife. "We saw one bald eagle, and we didn't expect that at all We saw a wood duck and a great blue heron.
