Show Pirates produces merrimen t at PMT By Nancy Nlelich Tribune Staff Writer They're telling a wonderful story, without diminishing the glory, so indulge in some excellent diction and visit an innocent fiction now through March 12 at Pioneer Memorial Theatre. The Pirates of Penzance by Sirs Sullivan and Gilbert is being treated Theater rei ieiv royally by an extraordinary band of pirates, pretties and police, the likes of which have never been seen on a local stage, and perhaps never will be again. With glistening tears and hearts on fire, this rousing, robust, rollicking production takes hold in the opening moments and expands into even greater merriment with each toss of a sword, each swash of a buckle. He has more bits than a brace and uses all to great advantage. Whether foot or unwrapping a rapier into his is in tripping over a trunk, his voice the right place; his form, purposefully asunder. And then there are the policemen Keystone Kops whose rubbery legs often collide with misplaced nightsticks, but always with finite precision. The Kops are directed by their verSergeant, Max Robinson, whose suronce actor an as again satility faces magnificently. Pirate Police Some double casting allows Kops to become pirates with the rewards equal in both cases. In fact the entire chorus, both men and women selected from local talent, is as fine a group - eral daughter. matter No how delightfully silly the appear out front, this consummate ensemble arrives at each situation with the utmost sincerity, and therein lies the secret of this productions success. Moral Maidens manners Employing sound (the strings with a in the orchestra have been replaced by synthesizers and saxophones), the bravery is bold, the curtsies quaint, the maidens moral. With pearly patter and loving lyrics, the music literally flies from one voice to another, pausing on occasion d for a Hurrah or a Hear, Hear. From the time the tiny cut-oship brings its load of pirates front and center, to the final thumping of every wandering heart, there is never a pirate out of character, never a maiden misrepresented, never a general who isnt a major. The casting is simply wondrous, the energy contagious, all to the credit of New York guest director Larry Carpenter, who somehow had the foresight to bring together this excellent company. Relishes Ruth The rather loathsome role of Ruth is agreeably portrayed by import Mary Stout. In this day and age, it is somewhat difficult to laugh heartily at the expense of a character who is supposed to be aging, ugly and desperate, at 47. Nonetheless, Stout makes the best of the situation and plays discarded Ruth with great relish. Likewise for the other actresses, including the beautifully voiced and subtle comedienne Caroline Peyton, who, as Mabel, is so busy traveling the high Cs she scarcely has time for Frederics kisses. In the roles, Haskell Gordon has put his own stamp on matters and equations His Modern Major General is a delightful clown, appropriately prissy and cunningly clear throughout all the pattering. goings-o- n W Redwood Rf 966433 MIOO 1ST ,9.23 FEB. While the performers deserved standing ovations, this superbly interpreted Pirates" belongs equally to the musical direction of James Prigmore and the choreography of Jayne Luke. Both are of the highest caliber and executed with great aplomb. The shows visual beauty is the work of designer Ariel Ballif, with lighting by Peter Willardson and Hugh Hitchens. This marvelous madcap musical continues nightly, except Sundays, through March 12. Curtain is 8 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee March 8. Frederic, by name, he is 21 as the tale begins, and ready to leave his obligation. No longer a member of the despicable crew, this daring lad announces that it his duty to rid society of the lot of them. as can be remembered in any PMT musical. But if there must be one dash that is a little more dashing, one bravery with a bit more bravura, one open heart a beat louder, it must all belong to Sal Viviano as young Frederic. With the innocence of a babe and the potential of a Valentino, this agile, redhead takes command of the stage without upstaging, sings forcefully but not obtrusively, and most of all, loves as if his very soul was on his sleeve. Subtle Sal Viviano is an immensely charismatic actor whose strength lies in his subtlety. He moves from the inside out, and never is there a question as to his intention.
