Dan Miller of Mills Publishing, 2010 S. 1000 East, conducted an informal survey of his fellow property owners from which he derived a poll showing the majority favored the existing business zoning. He then presented a petition and map to members of the Salt Lake City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission. Some of us didnt really know what it was and he Mr. Miller wouldnt really say, said resident Jan Bagley, 2019 S. 1000 East. I didnt sign it, but some of my neighbors did and when we found that it was for the commercial zoning two of them wrote letters to the Council to get their names removed from the petition," Mrs. Bagley said. Included in the Westminster area tion, the is zoned An original member of the states Narcotics and Liquor Law Enforcement Bureau has been named bureau chief by State Public Safety Director John T. Nielsen. sec- high-densit- y commercial; the City Councils master plan for Sugar House recommends down zoning it to residential. I appreciate what my neighbors have to say, however, I resent some of them wanting to destroy the value of my property, through a residential rezoning, Mr. Miller said. 'Tve been here for 10 years under the commercial zoning and there are other businesses here who also favor it. Even though Mrs. Bagley s house is across the street from the commercially zoned area, she said her family is affected by it. Mr. Miller said business zoning would increase the value of our property, but as homeowners we have nothing to gain, if the City Council votes to retain the zoning. James H. Gillespie Jr., 39, formerly assistant bureau chief, will take over from Grant K. Larsen, who has been named internal affairs chief within the commissioners office, Mr. Nielsen said. The drug enforcement agency was created in 1969 and Mr. Gillespie was among the first officers hired. He was formerly an Ogden City police officer and a military police officer for four years before that. Mr. Gillespie has attended police science classes at Weber State College and recently graduated from the FBI National Academy. Mr. Gillespie lives in Layton with his wife and three children. Those who attend the free exhibition will find that there are a significant number of officials keeping a watchful eye on things, but fingerprinting and holds on currency have been waived. However, the owners of Rust Rare Coins have filed a suit in federal court claiming that Salt Lake Citys ordinance regulating numismatic dealers is unconstitutional, and threatens to ruin their business. Mayor DePaulis eagerly pointed out, though, that the citys intention is not to burden visiting coin dealers, or any other groups that wish to convene in the city. He said he was concerned that numismatists felt Salt Lake City ' wanted to put them in the same category with pawn ' shop dealers. Debbie Muehleisen, communications director for the I ANA, said while "we had initially anticipated having v some difficulties with the police department here check- ing peoples goods," the case had proved differently. He added that the release was necessary because inflow threatened to fill the reservoir by Thursday night. After the damaging surge, however, cooler temperatures and the change from rain to snow slowed the inflow considerably and "gave us a new outlook on things. Flood-stag- e releases will continue for several days to lower the reservoir further, Mr. Flint noted, because "if it rains again or turns warm, wed be right back in the soup. Another 2 to 4 inches were expected overnight. An extreme backcountry-avalanch- e warning remains in effect for the northern Wasatch mountains from the Utah-Idahborder to Spanish Fork Canyon. Mr. Alder estimated the storms produced 6 to 12 inches of rain in northern Utah valleys, as well as 60 to 100 inches of snow in the mountains above the 8,000-folevel. Ben Lomond Peak received 13.90 inches of precipitation in that period and Trial n Lake 11.40 inches. Silver has registered 11.25 inches this month.
