The first or the breeders of sunflowers appear to be the Ozark bluff dwellers who selected plants and seed for cultivation. Editor' Note. For most Indians, the primary use of the sunflower was as food. They were lightly roasted then ground into flour and used in breads or with other vegetables They found many uses for the seed as well as other parts of the plant. By Genevieve H, Folsom Tribune Garden Editor Each year, the National Garden Bureau selects one flower and one vegetable as the flower or vegetable of the year. In 1986, the sunflower and corn will be honored. The sunflower, a native American plant (Helianthus species), has adapted to growing in each state in the continental United States. The sunflower is a true native wild flower and deserves recognition for its wild and cultivated forms. Medicinal Uses Some medicinal uses include as a cure for rattlesnake bite as practiced by the Zuni Indians. The Dakotas and other tribes made an infusion from the sunflower head to relieve chest pains. The Ci'chite extracted juice from the stem for cuts and wounds believing it helped in a quick recovery without infection. The extracted oil also was used to anoint the hair and as a base for paint pigments. A yellow dye was extracted from the ray flowers, and a purple dye was made from soaked purple seeds which were used to make colored baskets and to decorate the skin. The diversity of the Helianthus family is a marvel. Some of the wild looks more like cosmos or creeping zinnia than a vision of a stately sunflower. There are creamy white, red, bronze and bicolor flowers of cultivated varieties than any gardener can grow. sub-speci- One of the few cultivated plants native to North America, it is believed that wild sunflowers covered thousands of square miles of land that is now the Western United States. Sunflower remains have been found in North American archaeological sites as early as 3,000 B.C., reports the National Garden Bureau. Center of Origin The center of origin for wild sunflowers is considered Spanish explorers, while looking for gold and treasures, collected many of the New World's flora, introducing the sunflower to Europe for its ornamental qualities. It was grown as a curiosity; the herbalists of the time found no virtues in sunflowers. The first published record of the sunflower was in 1568 by the famous Bel- - In the last 50 years, the Russians bred sunflowers for high oil and improved resistance In 1966, an open polli nated Russian bred cultivar was introduced in the United States This and other cultivars began the first sustained United States commercial production of the oilseed type of sunflower Since 1966 many research programs in the U S. have improved the oil yield in sunflower hybrids. The sunflower now ranks second among all oil seed crops in the world as an important source of edible vegetable oil Gardeners might not realize the diversity of colors, sizes, in sunflowers. gian herbalist Rembert Dodoens. By 1616, the sunflower was common in English gardens. Rediscovered Food Value It is not known for sure when the rediscovery of the food value of the sunflower seed happened. Some had experimented with eating and preparing different parts of the sunflower as food and even found the buds to be quite good. In 1600 John Evlyn wrote of making macaroons from a flour made from ground seeds, but he found the flavor to be similar to turpentine. The sunflower is a member of the Coinpositae family, the second largest flowering plant family. Other members of this family include aster, marigold, dandelion, black-eyeSusan, lettuce, artichoke, chicory and the pest, ragweed. d arent the winner, Chump, the house always is You wins on the horses. While gathering my toiletries, I found my bottles of shampoo and conditioner were too big and took up too much room. Instead of buying a couple of trial-siz- e bottles which are great for small trips away from home, I remembered my stock of shampoo and conditioner samples I received in the mail. These sample pouches are not only free but take up very little of my valuable suitcase space. I also have sample pouches of hand lotion. Having short hair, I have found one pouch is usually all I need for a short stay. If I have to discard any that might be left over, Im not throwing out money. These people could win consistently by remembering all the cards that were played, especially when there were five or six people in the game. But the casinos put an end to that by using multiple decks. So, my friends, blackjack is now a house game, like roulette and the slot machines.
