City 1988 Frank WATANABE den Novembei 14 ”1 was never physically attracted to women I am emotionally attracted to them They are my best friends" he said Four years ago he was working as an interior designer in Dallas and living with another man in "what I thought was a monogamous relationship” After being diagnosed with the AIDS virus he said his companion left him "I still love him very much He has been tested every year and is still negative for the AIDS virus" he said Sharpton said when his lover left he turned to his mother for support "She had a terminal illness herself so she understood somewhat She told me she loved me and I would always have a home She is a true Christian " Sharpton said he decided to fight to live and not wait to die After a talk with author Carol Lynn Pearson who wrote the book “Goodbye I Love You" about her husband who died of AIDS Sharpton came to Salt Lake City His visit here was a turning point he said much ignorance in this stale concerning AIDS no one was really speaking out" he said Sharpton decided to move to Utah to educate people about AIDS His mother a devout Mormon warned him that "those Mormons in Utah are so different' but Sharpton said he hasn t regretted the decision ' I have met people in this state who care" he said Sharpton is a lobbyist at the Legislature and said he has had problems with some conservative groups such as Families Alive "One lady told me she had heard you can get AIDS from door knobs I told her I didn't know what she was doing with door knobs but it was no problem for me" he said He said one problem in Utah is dealing with pressures and stigma brought on by the predominant LDS religion "There are many bisexual and homosexual men in this state who are endangering their wives Their wives are unaware of the danger We have had two AIDS cases in Utah this month of heterosexual women and one child a baby at birth being infected by men who are active members of the church and also bisexual" Sharpton said The answer he said lies in people being more accepting and compassionate toward homosexuals and regarding them as human beings with the same rights as anyone I have as much right as anyone to live and die with dignity My future is not real bright I will probably die of AIDS But death is no longer my enemy it is my friend" he said AIDS is a part of everyone's life He advised others to limit sexual partners and use condoms "Abstinence is really the best protection" he added erally funded program using senior citizens to watch "latchkey" children The word latchkey has come to mean school-agchildren who are left unattended at home because their parents have to work The $5000 grant to be funneled through Weber County comes from ACTION the federal agency that funds organizations like the Peace Corps and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program Pam Rogers Weber County's RSVP program coordinator said senior olunteers are working with children each Wednesday from 2pm until 4 30 p m at the Weber County Library The free program got under way last Wednesday Blythe Ogilvie the children's librarian said 15 youths participated in the program which featured a US Forest Service videotape on the Yellowstone fires Two RSVP volunteers staffed the event Rogers said the county hopes for "Partnerships — A Latchkey Program" to be established on a daily basis and extended to the library's satellite branches in Roy and North Ogden e The program will include guest speakers and educational activities for children in addition to promoting socialization between the two generations "We know there is a real community need there and it will take the community pulling together to implement the program We hope to not only serve the needs of the children but the needs of senior citizens and parents" she said Rogers said Utah has more than 400000 children in public schools Seventy percent of women with school-agchildren work she said which means there are thousands of children in latchkey situations "We are not addressing just the educational needs of the children but their safety as well An unattended child ran get into trouble or mischief easier she said Rogers said the program can also contribute to productivity of workers "We've all had a twinge of that three o clock guilt between 3 and 4 p m productivity drops because parents are picking the kids up from school or calling to make sure they ve got home they re wonder" ing where their children are she said e ' i General Motors driven executives the release said Six of the vehicles had been returned to
