Show The Salt Lake Tribune Marie I Hemingivay sets record straight By Vernon Scott United Press International HOLLYWOOD (L'PIj - Holly wood traditionally has been obsessed with women's breasts Some claim, not without cre- dence, that the entire movie indus- was built on a fine appreciation for that esthetic portion of the try female form Indeed, the careers of Jean Harlow, Lana Turner. Jane Russell, Marilyn Monroe. Dolly Parton and a hundred others may have rested on their bosoms, thanks to the American males preoccupation with this area of the anatomy With this in mind, much ado has been made about Mar-le- l Hemingways decision to undergo breast implants to increase the sue of her mammaries, a rather common operation among women who feel they are underen-'dowe- d Mariel was singled out by the tabloids because the operation coincided with her starring role in "Star 80. the story of bosomy Dorothy Stratten, the murdered Playboy centerfold Even then, the operation was absolutely nobody's business but Mariel's. Many another actress nas undergone the same operation to enhance her figure without word leaking out Mariels problem is the obvious before and after evidence provided by Mariel herself on the silver screen Those who had seen Mariel's outstanding performance as the tomboy athlete in "Personal Best" also saw the beautiful young actress starkers in a woman's locker room scene and equally naked in a love scene He- lissome, but modestly bosomed figure was perfect for the role. Obviously, however. a very different shape was required for the actress who played Miss Stratten posing nude in "Star 80. Mariel, who admits she deliberately campaigned for the role, agrees she could not possibily beat a hasty retreat into the big chill mainstream? of the middle-clas- s Eve of Graduation Trudeau seemed to acknowledge as much when he suspended his comic strip early this year. After more than a decade, he and his many imitators (on and off the funny pages) had said all there was to be said about such archetypes as tanning-fanati- c Zonker, the spaced-ou- t or from California, Mark, the u disk jockey. In his book foi the musical, Trudeau wants to be done with these characters altogether the shows premise places the Walden crowd on the eve of graduation, as they venture into the real world seeking jobs and mates Because the commencement exercises don't occur until the final scene, Trudeau must invent other story twists to fill up the evening a recreationZonkers uncle Duke al drug enthusiast originally m spired by the journalist Hunter Thompson conspires to bulldoze house the students' and replace it with condominiums Mike Doonesbury awkwardly tries to court the feisty J.J., and J.J. tries to come to terms with her long-los- t mother, Joanie Caucus. Yet the plotting seems perfunctory, as it the author is only killing time while waiting to bid everyone adieu. Many of the book scenes are enervated rehashes or continuations of old strips The show's flimsy structure only feei. accentuates its warmed-ove- r Trudeau is torn between writing a standard musical- - comedy narrative (complete with mawkish resolutions) and a series of sketches, with the result that neither form is realized. (For some reason the punchlines that precede the blackouts are the flattest in the script ) Only the straight political gags have bite. At various arbitrary times - but not By Frank Rich New York Times Writer NEW YORK The qualities that have made Garry Trudeau's comic-stri"Doonesbury" a national treasure are all present in the musical-comedversion at the Biltmore Theater. Best of all. you'll notice that the tone of Trudeau's work is intact-ostage, as in the strip, Trudeau speaks in a sweet voice that lifts him well above the madding crowd of diurnal satirists The more liter al specifics of the newsprint "Doonesbury" have been preserved as well Jacques Levy, the director, has engaged young performers who not only look exactly like the members of f rudeau s Wai-dePuddle commune but also sound just as we always imagined they would even when they sing. Peter Larkin and Patricia McGourty. the set and costume designers, have d done a clever, job of duplicating the spirit of Trudeau's doodling airy funny-page- s No wonder, then, that "Doonesbury" is a pleasant show. The surprise is that it's dull. A few bright interludes notwithstanding, this musical never catches fire. Some of the shortfall can be traced to conventional failings of craft in Trudeau's book and a weak score by Elizabeth Swados. There is also a philosophical problem Arent we all.
