Show r Y 'YY' ' f The Salt Lake Tribune Pioneer Memorial Theatre unveils Fanny kindly gentlemen who of friends, and a baby. It is productions like 'Fanny that leave Pioneer Memorial Theatre wide open for attack. What was offered however was an of mechanical acting, of pleasant singing, of handsome sets and occasional dancing. It was not an evening that evoked compassion or much response of any kind. First of all, except for the names of characters and occasional reference to a ship, there was no feeling of being in an old port in Marseille. There was little from the performers to give a European flavor, and the numerous scene changes, nine in Act I, seven in Act II, came and went, like signs on a street that you see and then forget. The finest moments were in the singing, particularly when Susan Deauvono expressively phrased her love to Joseph Paur and he, in turn, lyrically repeated her name. Fanny," under the direction of Keith is large in cast and small in ex- En-ga- r, citement. The performers are at their best when singing their roles, but when it comes time for dialogue, they walk through their parts, only occasionally stopping to react. Fanny," though written in the early 00s, is new to Utah, so there was a sense of eagerness for what might be found. Promising Premise The premise seemed promising: A seaport village in France, an girl in love with a man whose passion is for the sea; two rrj owe a McCabe'S steak a rib house only Oriare favorite ol Chow Main, Chop 8 uay, Egg Foo Yong. Sweat and Sow Pork and Shrimp, The humor that S.N. Behrman wrote into the dialogue was occasionally recognized by Zan Winn and Noel Twitchell, most noticably in the closing moments as the two play a game of cards. But even these capable actors had a difficult time projecting their roles across the footlights. Was there really a camaraderie that existed between these old Frenchmen? Did they really care for one another? There speeches would lead you to believe so, but where was the conviction behind the statement? Take to the Sea Robert Baker, as the admiral who encouraged men to take to the sea, offered a brief glimpse at honesty as he stalked around the port town, drumming up business for his ship. And young Christopher Angelos f)8:i M9 L i -- 1 I brought some visible warmth to the There were colorful moments through the dancing, as in a circus scene, placed in a stripped tent, complete with ballerinas, gymnasts and one extraordinary triple-fli- p across the stage by an agile young man. But even the usual lively choreography of Jayne Luke couldn't salvage the passive nature of this large show. It didn't flow or build or for that matter, lie still. It was just there, occasionally provoking a chuckle or hummable tune, but mostly, reminiscent of a painting that wasn't all that interesting to view in the first place. Jo Mielziner's original designs e were used, and included a giant net that draped in front of the port of Marseille. Carol Wells-Dadesigned the 30s costumes with lighting by Peter Willardson. The musical direction, which was a high point, was under the guidance of Evelyn Bartholomew. Versatility cared one way or the other whether he stayed or left There must be inoi e tiian fixed gaes off into space if we are to connect with a young man's desire to ride the waves and surely something deeper than a pained expression on a face to indicate a broken heart. The emotion must come internally, not be worn like an overcoat Paur and Deauvono sang as if they were in solo recital, their voices pleasant to hear, the music enjoyable, but where was the continuity between them when they sang and when they spoke? This is a dramatic musical, not an individual performance. It was almost as if these two people had been cast sole- ly for how they looked and nothing else. She is small, fragile and physically beautiful; he, tall, dark, muscular and good at projecting arrogance. They are handsome people whose forte is singing and when left to do that, there is some depth. When they are required to use dialogue, they enter an area that causes them to become stiff and unresponsive.
