Show V i IK. Friday, February Section E 1983 Page 1 Counseling key to alcoholism recovery By Judy Magid Tribune Lifestyle Writer Antoinette Spurrier and Jennifer Schirer are alcoholism counselors concerned that people anested for driving under the influence of alcohol will be locked up without the "key" to recovery. do not want T emphatically drunken drivers on the roads, Ms. Spurrier stresses. "Neither do I want to see them with mandatory jail sentences not requiring alcoholism counseling. Ms. Spurrier, former director of (he Utah Alcoholism Foundation family counseling services, and Ms. Schirer, a candidate for a Ph.D. in family and marriage counseling, have formed a program called New Directions: An Alternative Program, for working with alco- - holies and those arrested for alcohol-related offenses. It is an intensive, two-da- y program of education, prevention and intervention. The program includes an alcoholism screening test for offenders plus concentrated alcohol education and group counseling. Presently there is a mandatory two days in jail or alcohol treatment option for first effenders Ms. Spurrier said, adding that New Directions" has been working with this option since the fall of 1982. What we are seeing in this program is that over 80 percent of first offenders are scoring in the alcoholic range. We are seeing alcoholics, both first offenders and multiple offenders. Locking them up will get them off the streets. Thats good. But it's not enough. She expressed concern with the intense emotional attitude of the public toward DUI offenders. While Ms. Spurrier and Ms. Schirer point out that public embarrassment might give a "social or occasional drinker pause about driving while drunk, it probably won't do much about alcoholics. "Alcoholics are publicly embarrassed often, Ms. Spurrier continued. Telling them to 'Pull yourself together or saying Look what you are doing to the family' has not proven successful therapy. I have a child. I don't want someone to drive down the street and harm her. I also know that stiff sentences alone for DUI will not prevent people from drinking and driving. The counselors feel that their "New Directions has been successful. They also feel that these offenders are in need of an education and prevention program. Many of the preliminary recommendations on the subject, including a report from the Governor s Commission on Drinking and Driving, stress treatment as well as punishment, Ms. Spurrier continues. "As counselors, we are concerned that these recommendations are included in the laws that arc made in this legislative session." "New Directions program is available to anyone concerned about his own drinking patterns or about any problem drinker.
