Show The Salt Lake Tribune Fridav, February 1H, 198,1 D3 Assies Hold Off Fullerton By Ray Herbal Tribune Sports Writer LOGAN Sometimes the Aggies are like one big tease. Shooting only 50 percent (6 of 12) from the foul line most of the game and keeping a crowd of 8,104 on tenterhooks, Utah State made nine of its last 10 free throws in the final minutes to hold back Fullerton State here Thursday. Utah State led the entire game, getting off to a 10-- start and holding a 1 edge at halftime. But, like so many other Aggie games of late, USU found itself in a nail-bitat the end. That margin began to melt when guard Leon Wood began to assert himself. Wood, held to two points in the first half, scored 15 points in the final 5 35 of the game to bring his Titans back. In the end, however, it was the of the Aggies that clinched USUs 18th victory in 23 games, and the eighth in conference play against four losses. Fullerton dropped to 17-- 5 overall and 3 in the e better league, which is a than USU currently. This defintely was a defensive win for us," said Aggie Coach Rod Tueller. Give Tom Stewart (his assistant) a lot of credit for devising the triangle-and-tw- o defense. We had to do something to combat their great guards, Ricky Mixon and Wood. Mixon has been as hot as anybody lately." Titan Coach George McQuarn. who saw the last glimmer of hope of catching unbeaten UNLV fade with this setback, saw the contest a bit differently than Tueller did. No, it wasnt their defense, the triangle-and-tw- o or anything like that, McQuarn offered. We just played badly. They played good defense, they made the good plays and they just did everything better. We didnt do a thing. We didn't play hard, and I knew what would happen when we came here. To beat a good Utah State team, you have to play - 67-5- 9 0 33-2- foul-shooti- 8-- half-gam- extremely well here. We didn't McQuarn, who has turned around the Fullerton program in a short time, could give no reason ror Woods ineptness early in the game. I don't know. It looked like he wasn't even here, shrugged the coach Greg Grant was a dominating force for the Aggies. His 21 points led USU scorers, his 10 rebounds topped the team there, and he blocked four shots. Yes, observed Tueller, "Greg was solid tonight, and so was Lance (Washington), who ran our offense well Ron Ence w'as the pitcher at the end who kept the Aggies ahead by five points, hitting free throws and offsetting Woods late shots down the stretch. After Washington hit two from the line with 1 23 left, Ence made five straight before a miss, all during the final 59 seconds. Grant's layup hoop and free throw with five seconds to play posted the final score. And while the Aggies began their second-hal- f struggle, it was Scott Harries, who had been scoreless as a reserve the first 30 minutes, who nailed three straight short jumpers to keep the Aggies ahead by five points each time. Wood began to turn it on, but Harries, Washington, Grant. Ence and Michael McCullough had enough left to stymie the Titans. We beat an awfully good team and we feel very fortunate, chimed in Tueller, whose Aggies now look forward to meeting No. 1 ranked (AP poll) UNLV Saturday in Las Vegas. I don't know for sure why we've had some trouble in the second half, but you have to remember that the other team doesnt want to lose and they have been coming after us harder. The Ags jumped off to a good start when Grant blocked a shot and Washington scored off an acrobatic move that immediately got the crowd into the game. Then came the second half and the g began. Grants four blocked shots gives the freshman star 63 on the year. McCullough and Ence trailed Grant in scoring with 14 each, while Wood's late charge gave him 20 for the game.
