The ability to reason separates us from animals and with that ability conies an appreciation of our surroundings heritage culture and history It gives us a sense of where we came from and where we are going This need has caused mankind to create great cathedrals dedicated to our past in the form of museums Paris has the Louvre Rome the Vatican the other great museums of Europe the Smithsonian in Washing- where among other ton DC memorabilia is the crack pipe used by former DC Mayor Marion Barry video featured in that on the 6 o'clock news Here in Utah we have the museum of Natural History on the U of U campus where you can see evidence of early man and what life must have been like for our ancestors And now history and culture buffs you'll be glad to know Ash-for- d Conn has its own museum The now-famo- "Ashford Outhouse" before you start to snicker it must be pointed out that this isn't building that your average was a fixture (no pun intended) on the landscape not that many years ago Rather this is a 19th century Now out-bac- k outhouse with its original weathered shingles and rusty latch According to the project manager Trust for for the private Historic Preservation in Connectithree-seate- r cut the (his hers and?) is no longer in use but was chosen from among dozens of entries statewide which included restored municipal buildings houses and barns Quoting the project manager "It's a rare and endangered building It's part of the past that is rapidly disapnon-prof- it free-standi- pearing" So these officials are making a museum out of it It must be noted here that this isn't just any old privy but the one that sat behind the Ashford Academy built around 1830 The academy and the outhouse ceased operation in 1949 When I think of historical preservation I think of things like our very own Building the Governor's Mansion Independence Hall the Queen Mary the train depot City-Coun- ty Lawrence Welk's birthplace the first KFC restaurant the original McDonald's Arches the first Domino's Phyllis Diller's Face Cher's body But an outhouse? Considering that the last time it saw action was 1949 maybe it will be a thrill for graduates of the Ashford Academy to go back and reminisce on what it was like when they were at this seat of higher learning and maybe a tear will appear when these grads experience a rush of nostalgia as the faces of former classmates flash to mind Who was that who was on your left or right when you contemplated the mystery of the uniof verse in the dark site? this People who are drawn to such a tourist attraction will be standing in front of it so they can have their attraction will be standing in front of it so they can have their pictures taken to show the folks back home Maybe the locals will print up and sell bumper stickers as they do for the Grand Canyon Mount Rush-mor- e Statue of Liberty Three Mile Island Graceland the Tree of Utah (that concrete crocus sprouting from the western mudflats) and the Salt Lake pumps They could sell coffee mugs pennants miniature corncob key chains and authentic framed pages from the Sears catalog just like the one that originally hung inside For the person who likes to collect historical artifacts this would be perfect to hang alongside your autographed copy of Bill Orion's Utah County Rep-Elefamily photograph Can the STUFF AND STUFF holidays be far off when news comes that the Midwest AIDS prevention Project in Southfield Mich is offering wrapping paper decorated with actual condoms For $3 you can get a package that has two sheets of white paper with red green blue and silver condoms interwoven into the words "Hobday Wrapping" Brings a whole new meaning to the word mistletoe! semi-darkne- ss now-histor- CIAO!
