That isn't ice cream That's flavored lard But spotting the hokum in bogus boasts like 93 percent fat "free" is part of the challenge of being a con sumer in America today And I have become aware of these matters be- 4 -- - :- - -- W9 tt:" '' fr'' t!' make us like their old ways — or to make us think their old ways are the new ways Fat for instance Some of the big money in the food industry today has to do with answering a burgeoning consumer demand for leaner food So a manufacturer can take the fat out of his food Or he can try to con the consumer into thinking he has taken the fat out of his food You do that by declaring fat food "light" But "light" doesn't mean baked fish After all many of us grew up in the era of the frying pan a time when people worked hard in the field and factory all day burning grease to keep going But you can't eat that way if you sit for a living You end up with a lot of greasy chairs So this is a terrible time for people In the edible grease business Butter is dead Meat grease is dead Chocolate chip cookies will soon be avail- Bill Hall t lion The food companies are like the American auto manufacturers who saw those little Japanese cars coming Into this country 15 years ago and laughed it off as fad Similarly a lot of food companies have found themselves in a slim era trying to market fat products Some of them still think it's a fad And I am among the many who sometimes entertain the delusion they are right In weak moments I sometimes expect an announcement that it's all a horrible mistake — that scientists have discovered that butter cookies and greasy potato chips and deep-frie- d lard burgers are beneficial after all I keep waiting for a study proving that people who eat fried pork chops live longer than people who eat frozen lard rip le --- --- able only by going down an alley knocking on a door and telling the face behind the little hole in the door "Greasy Joe sent me" This must be traumatic for some food producers How would you like to be stuck with a factory full of fat during the graying of America a time when geezers all over the nation are having their favorite fat ice cream pried from their old hands by vicious nutritionists?
