Show GERMAN DRIVE OH WESTPOffTPONED CHECK IMPOSED ON ARCHDUKE JOSEPH FERDINAND'S ARMY CAUSE OF DELAY. Neither Side Has Attempted Anything of Decisive Nature, and it is Believed it May be Weeks Before They Do. London. The check which the Russians Rus-sians have imposed on Archduke Joseph Jo-seph Ferdinand's army in southern Poland, Po-land, and the additional strain which this has placed on the German general gen-eral Von Mackenzen's army to the right, has postponed, It is believed in military circles here, the threatened German offensive in the west, and there is now a possibility that the allies al-lies will be the first to take the of fensive. In support of this it is pointed out that the attacks by the German crown prince's army in the Woevre, which the German press announced was the commencement of a general move forward, for-ward, have ceased, and what fighting is going on along the western front consists of artillery engagements, a few isolated attacks, and counter-attacks by infantry, whica make little or no difference in the positions of the opposing forces. The British, according to the French report, have repulsed a German attack. at-tack. The German reports, however, allude to this as a British attack, and Berlin says it was repulsed 'With considerable con-siderable loss. In fact, the French pnd German reports are generally contradictory con-tradictory in respect to what fighting has taken place, tut from the trend of them it is evident that neither side has attempted anything of a decisive nature, and it is believed here that it may be weeks yet before they do. So far as the Germans are concerned, con-cerned, military observers assert they are bound to carry out their offensive against the Russians until there is some decisive engagement, such as the capture of the Lublin-Cholm railway, which, it is asserted, would have been in their hands before now if the Aus-trians Aus-trians advancing toward the city had not been driven back. Italian forces operating in the Tyrol Ty-rol are not seriously menacing Ro-vereto Ro-vereto by their continued advance in the mountain passes from the east, but, according to General Cadorna's report, are now advancing rapidly on Riva from the west. Thus the operations opera-tions in the Trentina district are be- ing carried forward on both sides of Lake Garda, with Triest as the focal point of the advance . Official reports from the Tyrol front state that engagements in the Chiese valley and at Mount Piano have resulted in favor of the Italian Alpine troops, while the heavy artillery artil-lery has brought under range of its fire the fortifications erected by the Austrians on Ledro lake. |
