Show i FALL PLOWING BENEFITS 1 Robert H. Stewart, county farm ' i demonstrator, was a caller at the Pro gress sanctum the forepart of the week on his way southward and displayed a couple of samples of oat plants both raised under very similar conditions ex- cept in the matter of plowing and irri- j Ration. j One sample was produced bv Carl j ' Wilberg on fall-plowed land and with ! out one watering this season while the other was produced by Lars Christen-on Christen-on land that should be a shade better bet-ter than Wilberg's, if anything. It j was grown on spring-plowed land and 1 hid had three waterings. In the Wil- berg sample there were ten well-de-: veloped stalks arising from the one P'ant base' while the spring-plowed "ample had but four or five and was nowhere no-where near the state of maturity of the ther. Both plants were from the same variety of seed and both were drill-planted and the samples picked indiscriminately. in-discriminately. Mr. Stewart advises those who are having their alfalfa for seed to examine ex-amine the flowering heads of the plants fr insects known as thrips. These I little pests can readily be found by shaking the blossom into rhe palm of j the hand when th-y will fall out. If 'he patch of seed alfalfa is badly in fested by these insects there will be little use of leaving the crop to seed as t will not amount to much and should he cut and an effort made w secure a good second cutting of hay. The in- i sect lives on the sexual organs of the plant and prevents proper pollenizing for a seed product. An effort is being made by Mr. Stewart Stew-art and the progressive men of the ' county to work up enthusiasm in the ! different towns of the county for Farmer's Farm-er's day for each town, when the tillers of the soil, joined bv all other interested interest-ed people, may go from one farm to another and study the results of the season's work in a comprehensive manner. man-ner. The idea is an excellent one and sure to bring about many excellent results re-sults if entered into with the necessary spirit. receipt therefor.
