According to those who are in a position to know, Joseph Jo-seph Hillstrom, who was executed at the state prison Friday morning for the murder of J. G." Morrison and Arling Morrison, made good his boast to die like "a fighting rebel." It is said that less than three hours before he was led to the chair, tile murderer of the Morrisons put up a wild battle against A. C. Ure, deputy warden, C. Coulson Smith and George Brown, prison guards. After nearly two hours fighting, Hillstrom was overpowered, but not until he had drown blood from the deputy warden and the guards. Armed with a jagged broom handle, han-dle, broken from a broom left in the condemned man's cell at his own request re-quest that he might sweep up the floor, Hillstrom fought savagely in an effort to prevent being taken from his cell for the execution. He had previously torn up the blankets from his bunk, twisted them through the bars of his door and cell and tied them. Then he threw his mattress against the inner side of the cell door as a further obstruction against the opening of the door. |
