inaccurate "— Francine" never get any mail and I was really excited when this letter came the other day in an envelope from the office of the governor When I got it I thought that maybe the Gov was going to appoint me to some important task force like the one on how to make the liquor laws seem like they were written by a normal person Or invite me to play golf wtth him and some of the guys with a Nassau at stake little Then I thought nawww with the special session coming up and all the news of how successful Idaho has been with its lottery and how much money it has already made for the school system by selling so many tickets to Utalms he wanted some advice on how to approach the subect of having a Utah Lottery without calling it a lottery at all Just come up with some other title like Voluntary Offering To Education Then instead of the state advertising and promoting the notion that people should go out and buy lottery tickets which would seem to promote gambling (and we all know that is sinning) the state could feel good about promoting a "Get Out the VOTE" campaign and urging residents to go to the nearest convenience store supermarket or local liquor dispensary and vote early and two-doll- oft of course you would have to buy a vote and just as in Washington where votes are bought and sold every day there is the possibility that you might win something with the vote you just bought With all this racing through my head I tore open the envelope to read this short note from Francine Gioni who is Normy's lovely and talented press secretary What she was referring to I found out was my reference to the Gov's "Operation Greenleaf" in which I rather snidely remarked about how they spent all this money to come up with a handful of pot plants I must confess that I wrote the column on a Thursday with the information that all the operation had netted was a handful of plants and no arrests That very evening after I 0 ern Better Smoke Screen on List at Dugway F 0 Barberi turned in my column it was reported that they had found an additional 4000-plu- s plants and made several arrests Needless to say it was too late for me to do anything except sit and wait to feel silly with my inaccuracies when they showed up on Sunday morning Such is life My next fear is that as I sit here on this Thursday writing this there is a nagging pain at the back of my brain crow-eatin- h American and Soviet interest in smoke and obscurants intensified when smoke was used to mask Israeli tanks from anti-tanguided missiles during the 1973 Yom Kippur War Dugway a remote desert installation best known for its work in defensive measures against chemical and biological agents was designated one of the Army's smoke and obscurant test sites in 1976 Its yearly budget ranges from $3 million to $7 million But the Soviets who used large-scal- e smoke screens more than a thousand times in World Whisenant the g k d prophet (and there are so many) who predicted the end of the world for Friday Sept 1 I talked to him on the radio the other morning and he didn't actually say that there would be a complete apocalypse rather that those who were true believers would undergo a that physiological transformation would see them lose all the blood in their bodies and they would become able to pass through walls and perform all sorts of amazing feats If you see people walking around today with bruised noses and black eyes you'll know that it didn't happen STUFF AND THINGS This Special to The Tribune Utah PRAPER — A Sipe Prison inmate is protesting his "tOijust Because of this grave violation the state is going to lose revenue from the sale of its booze the ciab will undoubtedly suffer some loss of business and that will translate into less sales tax paid to the state not to mention how much money the state had to pay in salary for the enforcement officer to uncover this crime And you wonder why they have to woman was being held by police after her boyfriend was found dead Saturday morning with a stab wound to the chest according to the Layton City Police De- partment The body of Michael stales Archambean claims the weapons hetwas convicted of possessing — a bloisk gun darts and two hunting knives — are "sporting objects" not dangerous weapons 'rrhe fact is that if my innocence of were to be proven for bank rob-be- t I wouldn't he considered a restricted person" he wrote Archambeau was convicted by a jorv of the bank robbery and police 04 prosecutors have no doubt they 1:otthe right man tif 11 1 :: ii I A i 1 1 ''' !
