P. Oveson presiding. The music for all sessions was furn-i.-htd by the Cstledale choir, A. Gardner Gard-ner Jcwkes, leading. The consent of the choir had previously been gained by the stake presidency that the E. S. A. choir might sing at one of the sessions of the conference in nrd r that parents in at- tendance might see what their children werj doing in the music department. Prof. Driggs, how.-ver, was unable to prepare any selections, on account of other work so that it fell upon the ward ehoir to render impromptu music at the Sunday afternoon session, as they had rot been notified of the inability of the academy choir to sing. EiJers Jos. F. Smith, Jr., of tiequor- . o n of apostles, and Jos. W.McMurrin of 1 of the first presidency of seventy were present of the general authorities. ; I'.rst C mnselor Aim G. Jewkes, in i his opening remarks reported the stake j 4f a? being in very good condition. There . sre some things in which the stake is not quite as well up in as should be, . bat on the whole, the people axe pros- ! perous and do not forget their Lord in i their prosperity. One deficiency that is ! a little noticeable is the absence of the fullest degree of faith. I BishopBrinkerhoff reported the Emery I ward; Bishop BjiI, trie Ferro i ward;. Bishop H. M. Reid, the Orangeville ! ward; a d Bishop Akelund the Castle- I dale ward. Each of the respective bish- j ops gave a good idea of the condition I generally of his ward. ' Elder Joseph F. Smith, Jr., spoke of i his gratification at the reports from the several wards, the same bespeaking the ' faithful intentions of the saints even tnough there has been a falling away j in production. Continuing, he discussed titning at length, telling of its observance observ-ance and the blessings accruing amo;u the ancients as spoken of in Holy Writ. Pres. McMurrin, next spe iking, complimented com-plimented the people on the unusually large congregation for the opening ses sion of a conference. It brings into existence ex-istence a better and more holy it than when the attendance is sparse. We ourselves must juige of the truth of tne doctrine preached to us. Tithing is an I impmant principle an! tne blessings resulting from an honest tithe-paving re great. The records of tne stake ihow a very low rate of tithe paying, nd this is caused by the presence of nun-tithe payers and the many who do not pay a full tithing. We are a prosperous prosp-erous people when we compare ourselves our-selves and our conditons with conditions in the world, where, though conditions re so bad, there are so many who are honest in their dealngs with the Lord. Saturday Afternoon Second Counselor A E. Wall, in the opening speech of the afternoon session txpressed his pleasure in the crowded house present, and continued on with a testimony to the progressiveness of our stake and of the righteous endeavors endea-vors of the saints to live true to the faith and to their knowledge of all that is grand and uplifting. The good results of example cannot be over-estimati d. If we live a good life our children are o much more likely to follow in our footsteps and thereby enjoy the blessings bless-ings resultant from such living. Principal G. F. Hickman also commented com-mented on the crowd present, continuing continu-ing he gave some figures on the status of the Academy. From figures he had been looking up, he presented the increase in-crease in students in eight years, of which data cduld be found. Humbleheartsare being touched on every hand by the all wise One.somCi times most miraculously. Workers of themselves are what are wanted in the cause of truth. Not alone those that have to be told to do this or that, but more are wanted who will continue on in the work without pause. Elder Smith spoke of the good to be gained from the discburses of this con-feren"e con-feren"e if we have but the desire to ' gain the same. Many good words have been spoken and much good can result, j if the 'principles as explained are adher- j ed to.- A conference of this kind will : be a veritable condemnation rather, than a blessing if we go to our homes and ignore what we have heard. j Pres. Oveson made a few closing remarks, after which the conference was adjourned for three months to meet at Ferron at the end of that time. |
