The Carnegie Hero Fund The officials of the Carnegie Hero Fund, which was created by the well j been doing a considerable work since the time of its inception, having, during dur-ing the eight years of its existence, rewarded re-warded the heroic efforts of a multitude of worthy men, women, boys and girls, j According to the published report just out, 583 cases have been granted and 1159 are now pending; 13 gold, 227 silver and 343 bronze medals, have been awarded and a total of $854,818.76 in pecuniary disbursements has been made. Following are the regulations governing govern-ing the commission's awards. The scope of the Fund shall be confined con-fined strictly within the following limitations: 1st. To acts in which conclusive evidence may be obtained showing that the person performing the act, voluntarily volun-tarily risked his own life in saving, or attempting to save, the life of a fellow being, or who voluntarily has sacrificed himself in a heroic manner for the benefit of others. 2d. Such acts must have been performed per-formed by persons the nature of whose duties in following their regular vocations voca-tions does net necessarily require them to perform such acts. 3d. Such acts must have been performed per-formed in the United States of America the Dominion of Canada, the Colony of Newfoundland, or the waters thereof. 4d. Such acts must have been performed per-formed on or after April 15th, 1904. 5th. Mr. Carnegie having directed that, in case of death, widows and children, chil-dren, or other dependents, are to be provided for until the widow remarries and until the children reach a self-supporting self-supporting age, and, in the event of disability, the disabled are to be provided for until again able to work, the maximum death or disablement disable-ment benefit to be paid in any one year to any one family or dependent shall not exceed $1,600 00, the amount and man. er of payment in each case to be fixed by the Commission upon the recommendation re-commendation of the Executive Committee, Com-mittee, provided, in no case, however, shall death or disablement benefits be paid u.iless it shall be clearly shown that the dependents or disabled need such assistance. 6th. Medals, when awfrded, shall be presented to the person performing the act, or, in case of death, to the widow or next of kin. 7th. Heroic acts may be brought to the attention of the Commission by direct application, or through the public press. |
