Show PROF. PETERSON APPOINTED APPOINT-ED TO CHAIR IN U.OF U. Prof. Joseph Peterson of the B. Y. U., one of the three who were accused of teaching evolution in place of accepted accept-ed Mormon doctrine, was named as a member of the U. of U. faculty for next year. Prof. Peterson is a psy chologist of no mean ability and will no doubt be a great strength to the U. of U. Prof. Joseph Peterson, together with hi3 brother, Henrv. professor of education, educa-tion, and Ralph V. Chamberlain, pro-fesBor pro-fesBor of biology, were charged with teaching theories of evolution and high er criticism in connection with their school subjects. An investigation of the matter was made by the general church board of education, which found that the allegations alle-gations made were true, and referred the matter to the B. Y. U. board for action. The result of the consideration of the cases of the accused teachers was the issuance of an ultimatum that teachers employed in the church schools must refrain re-frain from teaching any theories at variance with the doctrines of the church. Following this action. Prof. Joseph Peterson presented his resignation to the board of the Provo school, the same to take effect at the end of the present school year. When the matter of filling the staff of the University of Utah for next year was taken up by the regents, the name of Prof. Peterson was presented, and he was appointed to the chair of psychology. |
